I looked for a post and could not find one covering this, if there is I apoligize. Please direct me to the location if you know where to find it.

I went to tighten my rear drums (e-brake) tonight, and when I removed the rotor I found grease (or oil) inside the drums on both sides. Its hard to imagine I lost both seals but then again...

Anyone have any thoughts besides the seals?

Thanks
J

It pretty much has to be coming out of your axle. Smell the grease and if it smells pretty bad, then it will be rear end grease (or oil). If it is, check to see if your axle vent is clogged. If it is, open it up or replace it and then try cleaning the shoes and drum area with Brake Clean and check it again in a couple of weeks to see if it is still leaking. Also, check the level of the grease in the rear. If it still leaks, then you are looking at new seals. If the vent is not clogged, then you're looking at new seals.

If Hypoid oil in the diff leaks thru the seals and gets in the drum, it will "cook off" any light hydrocarbons and leave a "greasy" substance behind. Change the bearings AND the seals.

Dam n axle vent

I guess you went to tighten your E-brake cause it's not holding. Unfortunately I don't think your going to get by with just cleaning the E-brake brake shoes. If you cooked the diff oil into a greasy mess I would suspect the shoes are impregnated with the oil at this point. If you haven't done the axle vent mod I would suggest preforming it. And I know some people still have issues after the vent mod, but I feel they are much fewer and far between. Also make sure your rear brake pads aren't oily, my bet would be they are also. Sorry for your troubles, and good luck.
