So with all the talk about carrier bearings and u-joints failing, I'm wondering what everyone's opinion is for the best kind of grease for our problematic u-joints to keep them running as long as possible?

Lithium grease is what most shops will use if there are zerks present.

You can buy aftermarket u joints that come with grease fittings. The factory u joints come without them. If you did have greaseable joints, you use the same grease that is used to lube suspension parts with a grease gun.

Carquest sells Neapco u joints for our trucks. Some of them have a grease fitting with the kit. Parts number 1-0256, 2-4800 and 2-4801 have grease fittings. You can research them using this link.

Just some odd info that I saw on tv. When installing U-joints with zerks, make sure you put the zerk into compression when the truck is in drive. This is good practice to help eliminate weak points created when the joint is drilled/tapped. If you put the zerk in tension, it could split when you are giving it a bit of gas or have a heavy load or etc...
