2004 Frontier

Changed the rotors out and found both sides broken. Impossible to repair. Do some research to find out what these things are and find out I'm pretty much screwed in ever replacing them. SO, I guess I have to replace with manual hubs.:crying: Hard to believe they discontinued producing the part!!

From the looks of it this has been done time and time again with owners. A definite weak point of the system.

Researching manual hubs: What is the spline count 28 or 31? Any recommendations on which to install? What is involved with the manual installation?

Apologies in advance if this subject has been beaten to death before..

Thanks.

You could get a used hub assembly from a salvage yard, but, that said, the manual locking hubs are a lot more durable. My preference are WARN Premium hub kits, which have a lifetime warranty and an established reputation. Their application charts need updating, as they don't list them for post-01 Frontiers, but they are the same. I believe the V6 is 28-spline and the I4 is 27-spline, if I'm not mistaken. 4x4parts.com has three different brands of manual locking hubs available at their site:

They come with instructions and are easy to install for those with some mechanical inclination.

Manual locking hubs are ALWAYS preferable. When on tarmac you get better mileage (and less wear in the front driveline) when wheeling you have more control. (Bust a front axle? unlock hubs, limp out in 2wd. You don't have to change a CV in the mud)

For those who are looking for this part, A seller on Ebay has them listed as a "Thrush Washer" there is one left at last counting. Not sure if more are available.

Decided to go this route instead of manual lock outs for the convenience it offers. Best in my case, maybe not for others, depends on use I guess.
