Fuel Mileage sucks when towing

Anyone else's fuel mileage suck when towing? I just pulled my covered single axle snowmobile trailer with one sled in it, and got 11mpg on the Highway! Do they do any better with premium fuel? mines just a 07 king cab 4X4, 6spd. I didnt come out of 6th gear at all, and was towing at speeds of 70-80mph.

First of all, fuel economy sucks in these vehicles anyways. Second, it's going to get worse towing. Third, if you were smart you would be staying under 65mph for a number of reasons.

I think the 70-80 is probably the kicker here. Covered trailer no matter what size = more wind drag. But yea, doesn't take much to drastically drop your mileage. A good headwind will drop mine on the highway to 15's if I am running 80.

Based on the entirety of this thread I feel you must post the reasons.:nana:
i tow an 18 ft fishing boat at 60-65 mph and i get anywere from 14-18mpg's depending on wind, traffic, etc. in the winter i pull a ice shanty around town and on the lake and i have never seen 10mpg, if i could only get 10 mpg i would not be driving the fronty anymore i would trade it in. i am also v6 4x4 if needed. does your truck have alot of miles, dirty filters, old plugs, dirty fluids, etc. might help to change some of those things and check again. i also noticed alot of more power when running the tow mode on my superchips cortex as well.
Yeah keep in mind that is a decent amount of weight you're towing behind a 6 cyl, not a burly V8, but if you want to maximize your towing performance I'd recommend a tuner with tow function and watching your engine load on the highway

MPG goes up if you slow down. Driving habits have the biggest influence on MPG.
Towing at 70-80 mph shows you don't have any respect for your own safety or the lives of anyone near you. Your fuel mileage should be the least of your worries. Wreck at that speed and cause injuries or worse and I guarantee you'll do jail time.

First offI Slow down....

I get 9-10mpg towing my 4k pound travel trailer going 55-60mph.
I am starting to think that the original post was just a joke.....
Slow down!

In my truck I might only average 16-18 doing 75-80 without the trailer. I towed a uhaul enclosed trailer with a couple buells(400lbs ea.) a couple hundred miles @ about 65 and averaged 14.5. Everything is fine with the truck just slow down. At that speed if you lose a tire on the trailer you are gonna kill somebody.
I hauled my horses in a two horse trailer from Arizona to Alabama. When I was in the mountains and hills, I had to be in 5th gear and got around 11-12mpg. The other times, I stayed around 15-16mpg (in 6th gear). I kept it between 60-65mph. I was okay with that gas mileage.
perhaps a prius with a tow hitch would help....

Wow...70-80mph with my trailer I didnt think was that bad, Didnt mean to piss anyone off here just asked a question, I travel mostly, I-81 in West Virginia and there speed limit on the freeway is 70mph, and if your not doing 80mph you get run over. I have seen ppl in Diesel dodges etc with fifth wheel campers passing me when I'm at 80mph, and thats all the time..lol. Anyway I just thought the frontier would have been a little more economical than 10mpg with combined trailer weight of about 2000lbs. Btw not trying to put anyones lives in danger on the road, I just didnt think that was that fast considering some of the other sights I see that pass me...Anywho thanks.
Unless your trailer has a high wall behind your cab, 10 mpg's for a 2,000 lbs trailer does not make sense. I tow my boat that weights more than that and I get close to 15 mpg's on the highway.
I think part of the problem could be the hills of wv. I towed a 6X12 enclosed trailer and my milage sucked averaged 9-10. Part of my mileagr was do to the hieght of the trailer it was much higher then the truck.

Trailer tires are only rated to 65mph, some manufacturers like Carlisle are rated to 60mph. That's why you're being told that it's unsafe and to slow down.
