Frontier quality

All in all, i can't really complain my Frontiers have been solid trucks with truly only minor issues and normal wear and tear. And i think I only two maybe three recalls on all three trucks. I know the other makes can't say that for sure.

2007 Frontier CC SE 11 1/2 years 213,000 miles.
what went wrong
  • 50,000 timing chain guides under warranty
  • 75,000 LF window regulator
  • 125,000 LF ball joint
  • 130,000 brakes and RF ball joint
  • 150,000 fuel pump then 2 coil packs
  • 180,000 carrier bearing in drive shaft
  • 186,000 u-joints in drive shaft
  • 213,000 pinion gear because i did not change u-joints fast enough

2018 Frontier CC SV 3 1/2 years 62,000 miles
what went wrong
  • Nothing but note truck tires were screw magnets (seriously) every single tire had at least 2 - 3 patches
  • totaled when big Tahoe pulled left turn in front of me with one car length to stop

2022 Frontier CC SV 4x4 Premium 2 1/2 years 33,000+ miles
what went wrong
  • 15,000 roof gutter seal cracked away from metal fixed under warranty
  • 19,000 blew two fender dash speakers fixed under warranty
  • 20,000 defective center screen on dash fixed under warranty
  • 21,000 defective head unit fixed under warranty
  • 31,000 roof gutter paint cracking fixed under warranty
What have the rest of you experienced?
I have owned three frontiers from a 2011 SV, then a 2015 Pro-4X and now a 2024 Pro 4X. Only problem I have had is the tailgate power actuator malfunctioned. Replaced under warranty.

picked up my 4th Frontier on Monday, a 2025 KC SV, gun metallic. still have the third one, a 2003 CC LB with more than 326,000 miles. Not a single major issue, not one, ever. my first Frontier was a 1999 KC. the second was another KC SE-V6. i expect this new one (the fourth one) to last another 20 years.
Congratulations! I just wish/hope they'd stick with NATURALLY-ASPIRATED ENGINES. I hate this new turbo fascination on, well anything unless you're building a Fox body Mustang or something to drag race occasionally...JMO

My uncle still has a 1st gen Frontier he bought new in 1998. 4 cyl, 5 speed, normal ameneties, and has never had the first problem with it in 27 years.

ICC TSB Fix and a door lock solenoid replaced. Both under warranty.

And I have an intermittent issue with the driver side blindspot monitor activating when no other vehicles (or objects) are in site. Only happens when I have my camper attached.
Interesting to see your post. New 2024 SV Hardbody 4x4. I've had it for a few weeks and in preparation for a winter trip to the south, hooked up my 17' AFrame PopUp for a test tow.

I noticed the same thing with the BSM/W when changing lanes, or making a turn, in my case it was right turns, but that's mostly what I made on my trip. I chalk it up to being normal. I'll further test using the tow mode button to see if BSM/W acts differently, but my trailer is about 2400lbs loaded, so tow mode didn't seem necessary (truck handled acceleration fine without the need for the tow mode increased shift rpms)

Agreed. I think if they continue to offer the V6, then it’ll be a non-turbo (thank goodnes).
4cyl turbos have their place, but that place isn’t in a truck.

Mine will do it on a straight road. My camper is only 12' and 76" wide at the fenders, the body is only 48".

This is such an informative thread, thanks for starting it as we all can benefit from these guys who answered that have a wealth of experience and knowledge about Frontiers.

The only thing I can add is that when I was wondering about trading in the Tacoma for one I asked the mechanic that I found to work on my old Bronco what he thought about Frontiers; he and his brother have been in business a long time and when I asked what he knew about Frontiers his answer was "it's a rock solid truck, go for it".

Welp. Fluid changes didn't happen because guess who was missing a 10mm hex wrench? Instead of just going out and buying one, my wife (in her infinite wisdom) decided to have me buy another full set from Harbor freight along with a hand pump because she also wanted to buy 3 more of those braun flashlights they have on sale. So now... we wait.

2018 Frontier SV KC 4X4 I bought it brand new and now it’s got about 45,000 miles on it, so far I’ve had to replace the drivers side 02 sensor, change the battery and most recently replace the crank position sensor. It’s got a rattle under the drivers side dash. It’s a metal plate that needs to be glued or something! lol other than that it seems pretty solid. I had a 2002 Tacoma pre runner, a 1999 f-150 4x4, and I think this truck is just as good if not better than both of those!

Had a paint issue in the channels that run along the roof. The clear coat cracked, and dirt got in and eventually the clear coat failed and the came off. Less that a couple of years into ownership and the issue was fixed under warranty. Also had a rather annoying interior "squeak" that was a challenge to find, behind the drivers side behind the plastic pannels that a couple of applications of WD40 spray made go away. First application helped locate the issue, the second made it stop completly. That too was a couple of years ago and no recurrance. Other than that everything in the truck that same with it is still there. Only 18K miles however.

So you have not had a timing chain replacement, water pump problem, transmission/differential problem, alternator, starter, engine problem, sensor problems. If not you experienced every Frontier owners dream !

Interesting first post, which particular generation of Frontier has all these issues?

Not sure but if any of my frontiers had all of those I would be driving something else

In general, the quality is decent.

Only qualms are the fact that the engine has a timing chain driven water pump, which will leak coolant straight into the oil if it fails, and some interior trim is pretty cheap plastic.

The fiasco it takes to change the in cabin filter is dumb as well

it took like ten minutes, not overly easy as desired but not that bad :)
