The Top 10 Significant Trucks of the Decade - PickupTrucks.com News

PickupTrucks.com and AutoPacific have compiled a list of the Top 10 Significant Pickup Trucks of the Decade from all of the new trucks sold between January 1, 2000 and December 31, 2009. These trucks introduced new innovations, pushed the segment into new territory and made the competition sweat while helping their driver’s sweat less. There’s no rank order, but we’ve identified the pickup that was Most Significant.

First compact pickup truck to offer four full-size doors and a configuration that prioritized passenger space over cargo capacity.

Crew cab pickups were popular in overseas markets long before they arrived in the U.S. Nissan was the first to offer buyers another choice beyond a regular or extended cab. Buyers loved the idea because entire families could now travel comfortably in pickup trucks on long trips or around town jaunts. The idea quickly gained traction with every manufacturer, and soon the crew cab made up almost half of the mix of all trucks sold.

i was thinking second gen too. beyond the doors, 1st gen is a dinosaur design. but you can't deny they set the trend with four doors. just look at the trucks around you

I disagree with you. You have to go back a couple years when it was designed. Say 3 or 5 years before it came to market. The Frontier had more than just 4 doors it had a radical design to small pickups. And offered more packages than most any other. The looks of the 1st gen have not gotten old or out dated (some may not like them but it's definitive not old like an ranger or s10).

I thought it was one of the first on 2nd air bag. And for safety rating the crew cab is 4 stars better than most. You could also get LSD and or traction control in the first gen (these came later).

The second gen improved on all of those and gave more to market but there are only a small improvements above what the competion has done. One being locking diff, and 265 HP.

There is a lot the author missed on the 1st gen but he is right 4 doors was a Nissan thing.

so much hate for the first gen wow. I love my first gen. It's reliable and looks good. Glad I got it over the overrated tacoma.
hey i don't hate my frontier at all. but i am not foolish enough to believe it is innovative or refined. when i looked underneath it and saw it was an updated version of my '94 hardbody (which was designed in the mid 80's), i knew it was nothing cutting edge design wise. but i also smiled because i knew that meant it would run forever.

You sort of have to ask yourself this. Was in innovative in 2000? Not today? Of course compared to now it's not but was it back then? It's like this. When I watch Overhaulin and see them rebuild a car. The interiors still suck even when they redo them. The seats look awful to sit in (but they look nice wrapped in new leather). Are they innovative at todays standards... NO, were they back then? Yeah probably when they put a 450 under the hood and tricked it out with AC.

They may have used a lot of designs underneath your hardbody but it's really what is above all that. I bet you didn't have 4 doors on the hardbody with a roof rack standard, and with dual airbags with 4 star crash rating. lol

I think how dated a vehicle looks depends on how its maintained. There are always some elements that dont age well (like the fender flare look like a rubber maid add on).

I dont think its so much hate for the gen 1 as it is most of us have seen the improvements in the gen 2.
Just like when the Gen3 comes out, we all hope nissan designers have been lurking here and know what we dont like. On the otherhand, toyota designers should be here too.

my 2 cents,

i still look at my 2004 cc LB s/c all silver with no lettering except for the little red s/c label and think it looks better than most trucks out there.

whether you like them or not, and i have had issues with mine and nissan as well, the frontier 1st gens and the titans are still the nicest looking trucks i feel. tacomas look nice too. hey who said that?!!!??

still cant accept the short bed on any of the 4dr models though. thats just me.

that list is bullsh!t. it has just about every single truck sold in america on it, it just highlights the trim features.
the first gen frontier was the first small truck to offer the rear doors, and the fender flares were copied by almost every other mid size truck manufacturer.

there is nothing innovative about the ridgeline, its garbage all around. the chevy avalanche is just as retarded... their marketing scheme is "changes from an suv to a pickup." just buy a damn four door truck and you don't have to change it, its already both. people are retarded.
