I know some of you tow a lot but this was new for me and my truck.

Towed our new (to us) pop-up camper up to NH for a short camping trip
this past week. The truck was great, it pulled the camper with ease. I
did downshift to 5th on the long uphills. Got 18 mpg on the tank that
that included the trip up (110 miles) and driving around while up there. I
normally get 20 so I'm pleased. Plenty of room for my family of 4 and the
dog, and no worries about how much stuff they wanted to bring.

here it is hooked up and almost ready to leave the campground:

my boys can't wait to go camping again! :)

Tent trailers (as they're called on the left coast) are great family fun. I towed a small one (750#) for years with my '90 Hardbody 4 cyl. back in the day and had many great adventures with my wife and step-son. They're easy to manuever and tow AND you can see over the top with your rear view mirror. Sounds like you found the trick to purchasing too: NEVER buy new. There's always someone out there who did and took the big hit in depreciation over the first three years while he discovered that he didn't have the time he thought he would to use it. Used ones go for a song and if you can live with an older one (say 10 years or so) you will never lose money on it as you can always sell it for what you paid for it if you take good care of it. Enjoy!
