I'm starting a project to see if there is a way to replace our ecus read only memory with flash memory like alot of the sx and z guys are doing so we could use a laptop and an existing ecu tuning software to play with fuel maps, timing maps, rev limiters, ect, ect ,ect

for the most part this will be a first. But i've been teaching myself about everything i should need to know for about 8 months now, reading everything i can about what people are doing with other nissan ecus, the various programs people use, prom, eprom, eeprom, flash eprom.

Before i really got into cars i was big computer guy, i know my hex and binary ect and I'm not afraid to jump in over my head and fight my way through a project

Cool. I first got into programming and robotics because I wanted to eventually reprogram my ECUs but I have since gotten far software and I'm very much hardware person. I will definitely not attempt anything like it ever and cant give up my ECU but I am very interested in what you come up with. There are a lot of us in the 1st gen community that want more power via ECU.

i've got a little dream of a sleep frontier with about 500 ponies and a twin remote mount turbo system

Nissan has a core on all the ecu's your best chance would be to find one in a junk yard.
I was going to keep my old one but i didnt have an extra 200 bucks for it.

I think if you happen to be serious about this is to build you a working test area. I'd find a junk yard with a working V6 engine and try and get a junked out truck. Expect to gather lots of data before dropping it into your own machine.

This sounds like my kind of project if I had lots of time.

I already have an extra 3.3 up on a stand (and it runs)

the major thing I'm missing is an ecu cause i obviously cant just tear into my daily driver especially considering I still owe a couple grand on it haha

there are several hardbodys in the local yards but no first gen frontiers
so I'm stuck anxiously waiting for phone calls and running through the local yards every sat or sun

the other thing I've been looking into recently is running megasquirt in parallel with the factory ecu and basically do the same thing as the ecu flash without having to reverse engineer all the nissan crap just to find fuel and timing maps
