I was very curious if our A/T in our 05+ trucks have a true 5th gear or if the 5th gear just means the torque converter locks into a solid connection ... being only "somewhat" of a 5th gear. Do our trucks have a true 5th gear position in the transmission or is it just a torque converter lockup?

chances are the clunk you are talking about is happening from the tq converter being locked. just like in a manual if you are cruising and suddenly let off the gas what happens a light jerk or clunk of the play in the drive train as a whole as it switches from the engine driving the wheels to the wheels driving the engine, and the same when you touch the gas again, a slight jerk or clunk of all the play switching back the other way. if your u joints were going bad you would get clunks in many more situations.

Thanks for the replies guys, Yeah colin123 may just be right! I'll just kind of pretend I didnt read what Fishy_Frontier said :O

But it DOES literally poop a little out of the breather.

My rear dif doesnt make any noise what so ever, no clicks, or nothing. Locker works good... sometimes I've got to drive forward and then glide into reverse slowly to get it to release from LOCK but, other than that everything seems fantastic.

My 08 has about 18K on it and it's done the thunk thing at 40mph since new. It usually does it when I come off of highway speeds and once or twice more times around town and then smooth sailing. I'll ask the mechanic next time I go in for my CEL & TPMS lights. Of course you know how non committal they can be :)

more likely a u-joint.
He might not even have a u-joint in the rear.

Mine has a rzeppa joint...I know the 2nd gen's some have U some have Repezza. Nismo with the m226 might have the u joint or maybe its the SwB's. idk if Nissan is random on that or not...
