I've got a 2008 2WD extended cab coming up on 36,000 miles. Am considering the Nissan extended warranty package or similar extension from other sources. Would appreciate info or advice from anyone who's purchased an extended warranty and used it soon after 36k miles or who has had major problems soon after reaching 36,000 and didn't have an extended warranty.

You may want to take some time and become familar with the site. The only real big issues are the radiator/trans failures. It may have been fixed for 08 but who really knows.
Other then that it is the r180 front diff (you don't have to worry about that) and then the m226 rear diff (only if you are a 6m or Nismo) with blowing seals and lockers.
If you do get one, don't pay too much for it. Also read all the fine print to make sure they can't void it due to an aftermarket part, ie aftermarket wheels with stock size tires voiding the powertrain warranty.
