In 12 new vehicles since 1980 including 4 Toyotas 4x4s, GMC 4x4, Ford Ranger, Nissan Altima, Mazda CX5, Infinity G35, 2 Frontiers & a Subaru Forester; I have yet to have a repair that would have been covered by either the factory warranty or any extended warranties which I didn't buy. At a nominal $1500 per extended warranty which equals $18,000 over time, it sure feels like I have come out ahead.

But knock yourselves out. Finance guys need to eat I suppose?

Last two new vehicles we purchased, we also purchased the extended warranties. Paid for the warranties separately so no interest tacked on, but gave us negotiating room for final purchase price. Main reason for taking the warranties was the “tech”. Just replacing one LED headlight, tail light, or head unit would cover the cost. Assuming nothing else, we look at it as a crap shoot. Cost of the warranties usually ARE higher at the end of the 3 year/36k, so we budget for the warranties now. The first vehicle we purchased the warranty for still has a year to go, and we have not needed it. Which we are still pleased the vehicle is operating well and has not needed any major work. Again, crap shoot. Wife is still glad it’s covered for at least another year. At which point she probably will be looking into a newer vehicle anyways??

Well if you were paying 1500 anywhere close to the 80s, I could see why you might be against. Min wage was around $3 😉

Everything has changed... including BCM, ECM, TCM, chips, and LEDs. Crank windows? Now the body computer needs to know what your window motor is doing.

The plans back then were powertrain focused because 100k was a ton of miles on a car... 200k is common now. Related to that we also put a LOT more miles on cars than in the 80s.

Warranties are not for everyone but the arguments against are kinda dated.

6 of those vehicles were post 2000 and 3 are still here with almost 100K on the CX5 & 2014 Frontier and 42K on the 2019 none of which have yet to darken the door of a stealership. I don't buy lottery tickets either.

Even the 2019 has less tech and cost less.

If you want to put out there that things don't happen often enough, I'll counter with direct experience of folks nearly in tears in the service drive. Anecdotal.

While true the majority go unscathed, the odds of needing paid repair are waaaay higher than the lottery. More like scratch tickets.

Not sure what you've been driving, but ECM's have been used since 1980 in most vehicles. Other modules followed shortly thereafter.
The only thing 'new' is a flat panel display has replaced gauges. That and the fact more folks are buying vehicles they can't afford, loaded with useless but expensive gimmicky options.
If a buyer needs insurance to replace the headlight, they are driving a car they can't afford. That's nothing new either, it's always been that way.

From 0-10000 or 10 months, the Genuine Nissan warranty does NOT require an inspection. I am not sure afterwards, but probably not, since its still under factory warranty.

I know RAM does require an inspection after 3/36. It has to go thru a "used vehicle inspection", and the dealer has to sign off onit.
Mine was still under the original 3/36 warranty and was told it had to go to a Nissan dealer.

80s ECMs were not locked to VIN... and still used 8bit code. BCM like we have now wasnt on every vehicle, some having NONE. As mentioned, even power windows now are managed while 80s crank windows were still a thing.

Single overdrive trans with line pressure effected by actual linkage was the current tech. Lockup could be controlled at least.

you are way overselling the "omg new things are expensive" - its fear that is driving the extended warranty sales. Buy what you can afford, maintain it properly, budget for repairs and move on. extended warranties are a scam.

Not sure how many times I have to say they aren't for everyone etc.. Meanwhile none of you guys will hardly even acknowledge an example were it wasn't a scam. I'm pushing back on blanket statements.

I would rather give folks a pro/con & let them sort it out rather than speak in absolutes with their money or situation.

Now, who is overselling?

buying extended warrantees for low dollar items is a racket for sure. my truck out the door 48,000. A fully loaded SV CC 4x4 premium with some extras. That is worth an extended warrantee. a 1,200-phone no, a 500-water heater no, a 500-grill no.

Do the math, replace your trans post warranty, no thanks. I had timing chain guides break on my 2007 frontier at 50,000 miles past warranty (3/36) I had extended warrantee till 75,000 did not cost a penny. And a could other small items. My 2022 11 year 120,000-mile bumper to bumper yes it will be worth it. Look at your total investment, it is a multiple of 10,000 vehicles. Meaning things are not going to be cheap to fix. Look at the LED headlight 1100 each. Yeah, I am not paying for those if they break.
Odds are you are going to lose money. 9 times out of 10. Pure fact.

you have 6 posts so far on this thread alone with "omg cost of new parts" as the main theme - yeah that's overselling

If counting (lol) one might not put one sided words in my mouth. I'll repeat myself:

"...cannot wholly recommend or advise against..."

"...This doesn't mean plans are universally good either..."

I'm clearly not a pushy salesman. 😀

Extra note: Dealers in my area will go through great pains to not sell a Nissan branded warranty. It's MPP and implied as an official option. Wanted to clear that up given the subject title. This is an extra risk in evaluating and adds complexity to choices. Probably more expensive also, bundled with perks you already have (like car rental or roadside or even maintenance). So choose, OR NOT, wisely.
