I am a brand new '23 Frontier owner and just wanted to make a post or two. I am new to Nissan trucks but, not to the car/truck industry, I hope my post helps some new buyers or those that are about to make a new purchase.

You do NOT need to add on, buy an extended warranty from your dealer up front. Why would you want to pay 6 to9% every month for 36 months on a product that will NOT help you or in any way improve or add protection to your new truck? Your new Frontier is a 3/36 covered vehicle from Nissan of North America folks. When you go from sales to F&I to go over your financing options it's time to be very aware of the highest earning salesperson in the entire dealership. Yes, F&I is the dept. where our dealership made the most money by far. Anyway, don't but that extended warranty, you have factory coverage already. You must buy the extended ( if you want to have a warranty ) PRIOR TO THE 3 YR 36,000 MILE perimeters. Wait until your close to whichever is creeping up and then go over your tier levels and understand what you are about to buy. There can be deductibles and limitations, each maker is different but most offer 3 levels of coverage for extended warranties. I was a ASM for Ford service dept in NY and we had folks daily freakingh out b/c they thought they had " bumper to bumper coverage" bla bla bla- we felt like kicking the F& I guys in the A**, lying greedy SOB's. I am speaking facts, please go slow and ask a million questions. BTW, you can buy it fro any authorized dealer NISSAN DEALER, prices are locked in my Nissan so there is not a penny difference. I hope this helps someone.

I am aware of what you are saying but if you buy it later on some dealers raise the cost and one dealer that offered them here had a nice price but the truck would need to go to a dealer to be inspected prior to them writing a policy. The dealers want an hour of service as a fee so it can be $125-$150.
A buyer could pay for the policy separately so they aren’t paying interest on it.
Thank you for your input, welcome to the forum and enjoy your new truck.

The vast majority of folks who buy these extended policies get screwed, as the insured failures never materialize. You pay for repairs that are never needed.
Yes, some wack-a-mole will pop up here claiming the insurance saved him $$$-thousands, but it's very rare, especially considering the cost of the insurance.

The OP is correct, the dealer keeps most of the insurance sale as pure profit.

What was true yesterday might not be anymore.

Used to be you hedged bets against driveline failure... now it's screens and sensors giving a whole new list of questions and considerations before you buy. Check very carefully if considering.

Tech now is expensive. When warranties were more of a rip off, "CAN" and "BUS" were not in the vocabulary of the average owner. Now those are used on the regular here.

On the mechanical side the risk is lower but that 9sp isn't grandpa's Gen2. I'm getting old btw. Lol.

One used to just set aside cash for repairs - you still have this option But the amount may be higher.

Yet, I still cannot wholly recommend or advise against. Best I can say is if you don't keep vehicles long, maybe put the money elsewhere.

^^^ Agree, 5 years ago I would never bought an extended warranty. Now the tech is overwhelming the skill of most mechanics, Manufacturers are putting out tech that doesnt have all the bugs worked out yet just to be the first to release the tech. All manufacturers are haveing close to billion dollar recall campaigns for failed components etc. The really smart F&I sales guys all have a national website to sell nissans warranties on a volume basis, as you can buy your warranty online from a dealer in NY even if you live in LA, right now the average online cost of a platinum nissan warranty is 1350.00 from the three I checked. DO YOUR research............

I tried that years ago and Nissan said an in depth inspection to get a policy, have you tried to price one of them out and see if you get the see hoops to jump through?

All you need to know is the actuaries are very good at figuring the average cost and need for repairs. They then add profits to the underwriter, profits to the salesman, profits to the dealer. As op stated its a money maker.
If you can make the extra payments you can save the same amount and come out way ahead over time.
You’ll always hear people justify this with how much they saved. They didn’t, as they never mention what they spent, on this vehicle, previous vehicles, iphones, toasters, and all the other crap they push this profit making insurance on.
It’s simple math.

It's not only that. Will a replacement head unit display even be available 4-5yrs down the road. I know many of these extended warranty packages dealerships pedal are aftermarket anyway and they will use used parts, so it may not be an issue for awhile.

People don't realize the parts situation these days. For instance, try to located a 4th gen Ram 1500 E-power steering rack. They've been on national back order for a few years now. You cannot get them new.

A fella on another board I frequent is not able to locate a specific coolant hose for his 2017-18 Volkswagen. It's no longer made.

This problem is only getting worse.

My son in laws friend owns a transmission shop and the local police sent a couple of their SUV’s to the Ford dealership for warranty transmission service. The dealership said there are no parts available and Ford isn’t producing them either so they then sent those vehicles to his private trans shop where Dave has access to the needs parts as generic pieces and Ford direct pays Dave’s shop now. Now word spread and other towns are now taking their vehicles with trans issues there. How can something so new that it’s under warranty not be able to have the brand who created it get parts? If it’s widespread in the future there will be paper weights and lawn ornaments EVERYWHERE!

Probably one of the reasons to buy an extended warranty earlier (or when you purchase your vehicle) is to prevent any price increase. They tend to increase in price every year, and do increase in price at different tiers (like over 12 months or 12000 miles it goes up).

An extended warranty generally starts at "inservice date", so on a new truck, its gonna start when you purchased the truck anyways. Sure, there is overlap, but that's generally the way they work.

I would never ever buy a third party extended warranty. Nissan sells their own factory extended warranties, and they can be purchased at substantial discounts online.

Never buy an ESP from a finance manager, but it later online.

Of course an extended warranty package is going to be cheaper when you bundle it with a brand new vehicle. The extended warranty doesn't even come into play for 3yrs/36k or 5/60. Less risk for the companies that offer the contracts equals lower cost.

You used to be able to negotiate prices on extended warranties too. A Harley I bought back in 2011 I opted for the extended warranty because it was $1000 for 7yr/Unlimited mi. I thought was a deal, plus it was transferable and added value to the bike. Other than that one time I don’t go for it.
