I'm waaay out of my league answering an exhaust question, but I think a double-walled tip provides air space between the nice, shiny outside and the hot inner wall which sleeves over the exhaust pipe. The air space allows the nice shiny outside to stay cooler, so as to not discolor from the heat.
I wish someone made an aftermarket tip for SEs, but the 3-1/8" OD at the flared pipe end is an odd size, plus there's only about 3" of length at that OD to fasten it on.
