Hi guys,

I’ve got some curiosity about the P0128 “Thermostat Function” code. I pulled it from my 2012 SV V6 4x4 Frontier today, after I notice the light had come on while going home for lunch. I did it with this ‘morse code-like’ DIY method. Nissan Vehicles Engine OBDII Codes Read Without Nissan CONSULT or Scan Tool | Nissanhelp.com and here is some description on the code, which seems to be generic. http://www.obd-codes.com/p0128

What seems really odd to me is that it’s about 89 degrees out today, and has been very warm the past few days. Warmest days we’ve had yet this year. I guess the engine could still be running cooler than it determines it is supposed to be within a certain time after start-up, even if it’s hot outside? It just seems to me like something that would show up when it’s cooler, or downright cold.

It makes me wonder if it could be related to a sensor thinking it’s a different temp than it is, rather than a thermostat getting stuck open and it actually running cooler.

My truck just rolled over 17,000 miles, and I do a lot of short trips 9 (I work less than 2 miles from home). Only complication I can think of is that in 2013, I’d had it for exactly one year and 5,000 miles – I had a major right front corner collision, and they had to go in and tear it apart to the firewall, new coolant overflow bottle, probably had the lines to the heater core apart, etc. I haven’t seen any trouble in the last 3 yrs / 12,000 miles, other than noticing some crumbly coolant scum one of the heater core line junctions into the firewall, looked like it had seeped some.

Just seems odd to me… any thoughts or common experiences?

EDIT: Just realized I should definitely still be under powertrail 5 yr warranty, picked up the '12 in Aug '12. Plus the dealer I bought it from did the accident repairs, which are supposed to be warranted for "life", so I'll have to see what they think...

I would say it's typical, right about in the middle or just below. Of course I can't recall where it normally is, and I doubt it's sensitive enough. I cleared the code, and it came back today. I attached a photo for reference.

I watched a few good clips on youtube. This one was short and to the point, made sense to me. The only thing that doesn't make sense to me is a thermostat going bad so soon, but I guess that's what warranty is for.

I put an infrared thermometer on mine while idling after driving home from work today (over a longer route) and the hottest I could see was 185 F, on a 88 F day.

Chances are the thermostat is stuck open and didn't reach operating temperature...which caused the code. If it's under warranty, they will replace the thermostat. Make sure you don't clear the code or the dealer will not be able to do anything for you.

Thanks for all the feedback guys.

Took it in to the dealer, thermostat and gasket replaced under warranty. Details said the thermostat seal had deformed, holding it open.
