A while ago I noticed a mystery scratch on my display. Didn't think too much of it. Last week I paid my daughter to clean my truck. She used a rag and Windex to clean the screen. After she comes up and says the screen won't come clean, it seems to just be scratching. Sure enough... Terrible scratches all thrives the screen.

Anybody else experience this? Is this a fault with the truck? I can't think of how/why this would happen.

Was this Windex ammonia based? I never use ammonia or alcohol based cleaning products on interior.

EDIT: also was the rag cotton or microfiber? microfiber ( especially cheap ones) will scratch plastic..even more so coupled with ammonia .....

What kinda of cloth did she use to clean the screen with? Was it a clean cloth? Did you put a screen protector on? Is the factory protector still on? As 19midnight asked, what kind of cleaner was used? Did she gently wipe or use excessive force?

Any of these can cause the issue. I for one, have not had the issue on mine.

I clean the dust my screen with the *** end of a stuffed duck & never use any kind of cleaners. Many plastics are susceptible to damage from solvents & chemicals, and it’s not easy to figure out which ones will or won’t until it’s too late.

I too learned this the hard way, after cleaning the surface of my touchscreen with the same cloth I use to clean fingerprints off my sunglasses. It should be a more durable surface, but I'm a bit at fault too, having never had a vehicle with a touchscreen before.

Well, crap. I'm 99% sure that I've used windex (yes, ammonia base) on touch screens (specifically car/truck displays) before without issue.
I can't say for sure that she used a clean rag, but I would assume she'd be that smart. I will admit that I've questioned the choice in rag, but kissing from these comments, the windex was the problem, not the rag. Dangit.

You never use Windex/glass cleaner on plastic. They contain ammonia and will scratch it. They sell special cleaners for plastic.

Did you find a way to correct the issue? Pollish/buff it? Or have you just had to live with it?

Don't beat yourself up too much. The screen in my truck was getting scratched badly through normal use. There were two factors at play: The generally dusty gravel road environment, and my finger tips. I didn't realize that occasional carpentry/rock/concrete work had made my finger tips tougher than the plasticene touch screen. I was able to catch it early enough and install a protector which hides the existing scratches. Strangely enough the (plastic) protector doesn't seem to scratch...
In short: The screen is very soft!

One way to 'remove' the scratches (it wont remove them but can make them invisible) is to get a screen protector. Depends on the level of scratch of course. There are other ways to buff them out, but I'd be careful and do a lot of research.

There is a technical service bulletin about this from Nissan. There is a protective coating that can be damaged by certain cleaners. I'll look for it at work tomorrow

Got mine from the dealer with scratches all over it. Didn't notice until a week after I brought it home. Didn't waste the time telling the dealer...

Doh! I wish I had read this thread sooner.

Had my mobile detailer come out to my place to wash the truck. Nice guy and he definitely takes his time and does a good job. Unfortunately the product he used totally scratched the screen. I think he said he used a glass cleaner? Or some dilution of isopropyl alcohol? Either way, the screen got wrecked.

If anybody is looking for a fix. This is what worked for me with decent results:

I broke out my Rupes 3" random orbital polisher and sufficiently taped and masked the infotainment screen off from the rest of the dash and steering wheel. I also pulled off the volume and radio tuning knobs by pulling straight out.

I was a bit apprehensive at first as I've never polished a screen. I used a Gritot's orange foam correcting pad and Menzerna Super Finish 3500. Gave that a few passes but determined it was not aggressive enough for the deeper marks.

Here's a 50/50 before I decided to get more aggressive.

Since I ended up getting decent results with the foam pad, I grabbed another Griot's 3" orange foam pad and this time used Meguiar's D300 correction compound.

Ended up repeating the Meguiar's D300 step about 3 times total on the left side and followed up with a finishing pass of the Menzerna 3500.

It's not perfect but much improved. I spent extra care on the edges and in the corners but there's only so much I could do with a 3" polisher. Can't really justify getting a nano polisher since this is pretty good.

I plan on getting a screen protector next.
