Yesterday I started hearing a dull whine (or faint horn) noise when I was backing up in my 2003 Nissan Frontier truck. It stopped as soon as I stopped backing up.

Has this happened to anyone else?

Thanks.

I have 121,000 miles on my 2003 Nissan Frontier. The temperature during the day ranged from 75 degrees to 95 degrees and the noise occurred in all temperatures. It didn't matter where I parked (my driveway, parking lot, etc).
I am a part-time medical courier and was delivering all day. The noise occurred every time I backed up throughout the entire day.

All manuals whine in reverse. It depends on your speed, go slowly and you hear nothing. If you reverse at a quick rate it gets fairy loud.
Every brand I've ever had did/does it.

I know the whine that you are referring to and that is not what I am talking about. This makes a sound like a jet when it is about to take off (only not near as loud). Or a tornado siren sound (but not as loud).

could be ring an pinion issues in the rear end... we could really use more info about your truck since we don't know you to help us make a more educated guess as to what might be happening with it

2003 Nissan Frontier Truck (manual transmission)
121,000 miles
Good condition
I was told that clutch is not worn out yet
Transmssion was rebuilt 3 months ago
I was told that the bearings would be the next to go. Any chance that this problem is related to that?
I am not an expert at all, so could you tell me what other information would be useful to you?
The sound is similar to the sound a loose belt makes, but it only happens in reverse.

if the transmission was recently worked on, i would say that's probably the most likely source of the noise. perhaps if you were to back down a hill out of gear and see if it still makes the noise (ie reverse but no power to the wheels). i would wager something isn't sync'ing with the rebuild and it's worn itself out in the three months since it was done if i had to guess. it'd be hard to tell without hearing it in person. have you taken it to a transmission shop to let them listen to it?
