Within the past couple hundred miles, when idling, i can hear from under the truck near the engine ... a tick tick tick tick that is in correspondence with the RPM, if I bring the rpm up to 1000 rpm the click speed rises with the RPM, this click is not at all very loud, pretty faint (this is when I'm leaning down outside the truck listening for it), once I get past 1000 rpm or so, I can't really hear it at all. i have no performance issues, nor is it burning oil at all, oil level is good.

Last oil change is 3200 miles ago... I plan on changing it before my next drive.. Does anyone else's truck tick a little when due for an oil change? .. What's your guys' recommended oil in the cold central Utah winter that isn't going to break my wallet ?

Im @ 28,000ish miles. No sign of bad timing chain guides... thank god...

Thanks a ton..

You shouldn't have any noise or sound in relation to a needed oil change.
Sometimes a tick that goes away when warmed up can be either a cracked exhaust manifold or an exhaust leak from the gasket.
Hopefully it's neither.

I just think that a lot of the 4.0 V6's are just noisy little beasts. Not all, but a lot are. I know mine is.

Nah, it doesn't go away after warmup, confirmed this the other day when I went thru the arbys drive-through... While I was parked right next to the brick wall with my window down, I could hear the faint ticking as the sound reflected off the wall into my window... it's really not that loud, just concerns me at such a low mileage.

At least i'm not the only one then, I'll try my best to not worry about it. I know my rodeo is a bit ticky since 65k miles or so, its at 130K now and it still sounds the same, just a faint tick, but still runs damn strong, so maybe everything is all good. . .

I plan on changing out my whole exhaust system soon, I hate this stock exhaust. 4 Cat's... jeeeeze.

Anyone will hear things they never have if you change the dynamics (the wall) of the sounds from a vehicle. The ticking may just be your fuel injectors.

Mine started to do this tick when I went up to idaho during the winter time, three years ago. I took it into the dealer here in AZ. It turned out to be the idle or the tension pulley starting to go out and it had stretched the belt. Now I have that same tick again after three years. But my warranty is up now. So check those out.

Does your engine burn any oil? If it does, then you might be slightly low on oil. The engine has hydraulic valve tappets that are constantly being adjusted. (unlike some engines where you have to set the clearance on the valves). If the oil is a bit low, then not all the tappets are getting enough oil. You might still have oil pressure, but it will make noise.

I have a case of the "ticks" as well. I'm at 72,000 miles and have had synthetic since new. haven't noticed the noise before this winter. Its loud when first started but goes away when warmed up. Checked oil and its full and clean. I'd be interested to find an additive that helps our motors with cold startups. I run 5w30 now.

A ticking that goes away as the truck warms up can be a leak at the exhaust manifold due to either a gasket leak or a cracked manifold.

Well I'd much rather have that than my engine wearing down already. With all the timing components and other engine related issues I started to worry. I'll have to take a stethoscope to it and see if I can pinpoint it. Thanks for the info!

Come to think of it I do have an aftermarket exhaust. I wonder if it wasnt installed just right and is causing stress on the manifolds. Causing a leak or a crack. I have seen this before.

I have an 06 Nismo CC. Mine makes the repeated tick like noise from under the truck near the T-case. Doesnt go away once warmed. I believe it to be just engine noise. I wouldnt worry about it unless its gets Louder. My truck runs like a grizzly bear on fire. Dont rule out the Placebo affect

Side note:
I run it too. I used to run 10weight 40viscosity. But there is just no need for that any more where I live...
In warm weather the truck can tolerate the 40 weight oil however the 10W in cooler climates is double the recommended viscosity.

What does "I run 5w30 now" mean? What did you run before?
Synthetic 5w-30 is all i've ran since new. Its what i've found works best in Utah weather.

I ticking noise under the truck is usually an exhaust thing. Possibly a heat shield rubbing, expanding or etc....

The vq40 is spec'd 5w30 but you really need to look at the viscosity numbers at each of your operating temps. You can then figure out what oil is required in your area. For the most part the 5w30 will work but you can go to a 0w30 for better cold flow and up to a 5w40 for summer.

If you are really concerned that it may be an oil issue, then simply change the oil and filter and see what happens.
