Drive shaft to rear diff question

My drive shaft is huge maybe 4 inches, then there is a short piece with about 1.5 inch diameter that actually connects it to the rear diff, is this normal? See pic.

Yes that is normal and correct. That is a CV joint and not a U-joint. Xterra has the same thing.
That large diameter part is a hollow tube. The small diameter is solid steel. The hollow tube is better for carrying the power over distance. The small shaft is needed to mate with the CV joint so the axle can move and still receive power.
