Drive shaft to rear diff question

My drive shaft is huge maybe 4 inches, then there is a short piece with about 1.5 inch diameter that actually connects it to the rear diff, is this normal? See pic.

The 2.5 KC C200 comes with all U-joints, so who knows what their engineers were thinking. Maybe it's 4.0's that get the CV-Diff joint.

mine is 2017 KC 2wd 2.5 automatic C-200 2-piece all U-joints.
