Diff Locker question

21455 Views 12 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  donphantasmo
Hell all..

I recently bought my 4th Frontier.. This one is a 2010 LE 4X4. I love almost everything about it, the only thing it's missing is.......

NO REAR DIFF LOCKER.

So, I was just wondering, how hard is the install?

I was thinking of doing it myself. I have pretty good mechanical comprehension. Has anyone done it? What's the best way to do it? What's the best locker? Mechanical, electrical, air?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks..

If you have an auto trans you have a C200K rear end unless it is a PRO4X but I see you have an LE, if it is a manual it is an M226. The stock E locker is for the M226 only. The ARB air locker has been installed on a few CF members rigs in both rear ends. It is more expensive but also of higher quality than some of the other options.

JeniorNV has ARB lockers front and rear in her rig so take a look at her build thread for more info. A search using the search bar above will also get you more info.

Good Luck.

I installed a Trutrac limited slip.I have M226.
You need to pull the axles to remove the stock carrier.
Change ring gear to the new unit.
Set clearance.
Adjust ring and pinion gear engagement.
You will need a slide hammer to remove axles.
Dial indicator and a msg base to set clearance.
Gear engagement paint.
I also bought a differential rebuild kit.
Don't anything about air locker install.

I put the ARB's in my 2013 and they work great. If you decide to go with the ARB, on the C200K, you need to do some slight filing for fitting the air line but other than that, it was a pretty straight forward carrier swap. You will also need to drill the Housing to bring air in to engage the locker and of course you will need to choose a compressor of some type. I used the ARB compressor.
The easiest thing to do would be to find a m266 of the same gear ratio as the front that already has a elocker in it and swap the axles.

I am currently adding a Lokka locker in the front. So far (jsut working on the spare diff) it is fairly simple. It does not need the pinion gear to be removed and thus no resetting the gear set clearances.

If you read the material on Lokka's website, the kind of suggest going with a front locker before adding a rear one. I thought think this is especially true for florida where you don't need 4 hi for snow.

If you are adding a rear locker and go with an automatic type (Spartan or lokka) you will have some driveabilty issues. Read JrNevadas account of her spartan rear locker and the fact that she is ARB front and rear now.
AndrewVK gave me good advice when I did mine.I was over thinking everything.

Hmmm... I don't really need the diff locker. I just want it.

Sounds like a lot to do. Do you guys think it's worth it? I just want to get out of sticky situations, but I think that the 4WD would do me just fine...

Thanks for all the help guys. Much appreciated

Have you ever been stuck. If yes get a locker. If no; DON'T.

if your truck has VDC and you don't plan to use 4Lo often, I would say a locker is in the "want" and not need category. I'd put my money on good tires first.

The couple times I got stuck the E-locker didn't help me get un-stuck. LOL Get some 10k ratchet straps and the tow hook, it's a lot cheaper than the locker and actually have gotten me un-stuck.
What "sticky situations" are you talking about that you think a locker might be beneficial? If you're relatively new to the off road scene, my suggestion is that you just take the truck out four wheeling in its current state a whole bunch of times. That's the only way you'll really be able to determine whether you'll be doing the type of off roading where a locker (or any other mod) is justified. Build the truck based on what you actually need, not what you theorize you might need.
I've never taken this truck mudding or off-road. I've taken Jeeps, hardbodys, and a couple of sidekicks. Also my Montero, which was phenomenal by the way. I'm just seeing what my options are. I think you guys are right. It's a want not a need. I should have gotten the pro-4 instead. But I'll jus be happy with this 4X4 LE just the way it is.

I just got a K&N intake and about to put on the exhaust soon. I'll be happy with that for now...
