I am writing this so that other dummies (aren't we all) may learn from my mistake(s) and have a laugh knowing it happened to someone else and not them.

It all started yesterday, after work my 4 year old oem battery died. My coworker gave me a jump and me being a dumb butt went and crossed the battery cables on my truck. My first clue was a small wisp of smoke.

First off: no one was hurt- thank goodness. Secondly: my coworkers truck was spared any damage.

I thought surely I fried numerous high dollar computers. The only visable damage was the 140 amp (yikes!) fusible link on the battery fusible link box. Of course, at that point there was no way to know one or the other if there was more damage.

Today being Monday I went to my local dealership and found out that you cannot change just the fusible link but must change the whole assembly. I figured, "Of course I can't get off this easy just how much stupid tax tax am I going to have to pay".

Much to my surprise it cost $34.24 including TN state tax. It was easy to change, just 3 nuts and two electrical connectors. Took me 20 minutes.

Truck started up and life was good again. The only collateral damage was the radio was inop! I found the 20 amp fuse blown and that was fixed easily. While the radio thing is weird I'm glad that was all.

This is the part number 24380-89914 and here is a link to the part

I did dig my own hole but I was able to climb out on my own.

Yeah, they got you on the fusible link. I think they are normally closer to the $20 range, but at least it wasn't an ecu, etc.

The fact that the dealership had one on hand was worth it imho. If I had to wait a few days to get one my truck would still be at work belly up.

That is a a very good point. A rental car would cost far more...
