A couple of weeks ago when we had some crazy snow in ny...i always the night b4 throw my defroster all the way up being that i have autostart its warm and toasty for the drive to work...when i got in the car i noticed a very symmetrical crack on the bottom glass. Later to realize its around the defroster

so my word is be careful about defrosting your windows!!!

This is defiently good info for those who live in cold areas.

I wonder how many people experience this every year? (not how many times they themselves do it but total across the US)

Zedbra is right.
glass expanded and contracted in extreme changes in temperature. Turning on the defroster will make the glass warm up quickly in the middle and the sides will stay cold for a little longer.

you had a previous chip or crack that contributed... Mine cracked the same pattern as you described but was from taking a wicked rock strike right under the pass side wiper...
