So I apologize if some one has already posted on this and a solution has been found but I searched this 1st gen forum up and down for something on it.

I was wondering if any one has figured out how to dis-activate their day time running lights so that when the truck is on at anytime you have to manually turn the switch to get your lights on.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi Ty;
I don't have a specific answer to your question about how to deactivate the DTRL's, however your Insurance coverage will be compromised if you have the lights off while on road. Off road, do what you like. Some Newer versions of the Fronty have switched from the Headlight Daytime running lights, to the lower Foglights on some models.

I knew about the lights. I was more talking about the ones that are on all the time. Regardless of what position the headlight knob is in.

are you talking about the small light above the turn signal? it should come on with your marker lights(running lights) on the first click of headlight switch. thats the way all 1st gen frontys do it.

i didn't know our 1st gen frontiers had them, but your country's laws may require them if your truck came from the dealer like that.
what lights come on exactly?

well its probably a vehicle requirement then. its not the markers or the fogs. every time I turn on my truck and put it in drive my headlights turn on, but are on a super low beam or something. it isn't as bright as when i turn the knob up to the headlight on position. Ill try and get a picture later today of the difference between the lights.

Day time running lights are factory standard on Canadian vehicles. I believe that the Canada DOT requires them.

I have a few pictures of the daytime running lights and the normal head lights here.

DTRL on

Well I do live in British Columbia, Canada.

But I know that they are no longer a requirement, because any and pretty much all new vehicles, including the ones my company has imported from the states, no longer require them. I think it would look way better if I could shut them off somehow.

Did some reading and found the information in the manual. Started on Page 47 of the electrical section.

Thanks Bubba,
Now I just have to locate and rewire that DTRL unit.
After I check with my buddy in law enforcement to make sure its legal to turn off.

It's interesting... here they're not required here but they seem to be standard on so many new vehicles that I think drivers are starting to "look through" cars that don't have them. Sort of like when you don't notice a pre 1985 car or one with a burnt out CHMSL (center high mount stop light) until a little later... Toyota and GM have been using them for years, but I think other manufacturers are using them now too.

I'm seriously considering replacing my marker bulbs with the brightest LEDs possible and wiring them to a circuit that's hot only when the truck is running. In the 10 months that I've owned the truck I've been hit by one driver, turning into a road - and had to swerve to dodge another one that didn't appear to see me at all. Maybe I'm just surrounded by morons, but I wonder if the silver paint and lack of chrome on the front of the truck blends into the pavement? Maybe I should get fogs with yellow HID bulbs and use them as DRLs... they'd see me a mile away!
