What are you guys/gals using to mount cell phone? I have a 2013 Frontier and the cheap vent mounts are low quality.
Scosche Magic Mount (Magnetic) - helps if you have a cell cover and stick the metal plate inside it. Here's a pic with my old Samsung mounted (now have an LGV10 w/leather case).

Velcro = 'sophisticated' duct tape.

I also use the Scosche Magic Mount and I really like it. Ive got mine mounted on the left side of the radio, above the hazards and below the vent. Seems to be a good spot and is easy to see when I use my phone to navigate. I had a problem with the mount was that it fell off a few times two winters ago. I ended up using 3m double sided tape to and made sure that the tape and car were warm when I installed it. Hasn't budged since.

What kind of phone are you wanting/trying to mount? If its just a regular cell phone then theres LOTS of choices. But, if you have something a bit bigger like a notebook or a tablet then your choices get a little thinner.

I have a Samsung Note 5. Its maybe 25% bigger than most other phones & of course a bit heavier to. With that being said, I use a Scosche window mount. I have it on the windshield directly above the little tray in the middle of the dash. The suction cup attaches to the window then theres a lever you push down for it to create a really strong bond. Its fallen off a couple of times & that's only because my truck sat in the parking lot at work all day in 95*+ heat. It also has a bendable 'leg' that you can maneuver into whatever position you want.

I use it all the time since I have Torque Pro on my phone & run it practically every time I go anywhere in my truck.

With the CD mount: does this negate one's ability to actually play a CD?

I'm running ProClipsUSA vent mounts, I currently have a massive setup.

I'm running two of these, one specifically made for US spec trucks on the left side, and one for the UK Navarra on the right side, the only issue I run into is there is a slight difference in the size of the upper US spec dash from the Navarra, about 2mm actually, and thus the one on the right side will occasionally come loose, even with the mounting tape installed.

I have one of these on each side, on the left side I have a holder for LG G5 and my ipod, on the right side I have a custom setup using ProClip and Ram Mounts products to hold my Garmin trail GPS.

I've had my setup in place for almost a year, no complaints about it. I drive for Lyft and Uber on the weekends so my phone has to be close to eye level and this works great. I guess I'm into it about $150 for my entire setup. In the future I plan to add an second trail GPS, so I may have to modify even further.
