I am building myself a backup camera system. I have a mini camera about the size of a quarter or smaller that I was going to mount near the hitch.

Problem is, while I've stalled buying a backup camera for the last few years, I've gotten quite good at judging my distance.

It had me thinking, what other "cool" spots are there that I could put this camera?

I was thinking maybe inside the front grille or maybe act like a rear view mirror and put it facing the rear.
I also liked the idea of putting it on the right side of the vehicle in some fashion so I can see if there are cars in the right lane when I'm attempting to pass a car that I can't see around.

Any good/better ideas?

I'm thinking that looking at a monitor would be tougher than simply turning your head when changing lanes.
I'm talking about the scenario where you cant see if there's traffic in the right lane because your behind a big rig. So instead of cutting out and then cutting back in, you can just see on a screen if the lane is open. It happens all the time on two lane highways.

I've always thought that a camera lookin under the truck would make for some cool pictures and would be awesome for offroad...like mounted forward facing on the inside of the rear bumper so you could see tire placement and clearance without a spotter...Patent Pending™

Hah ya I thought of that. I might do it just for fun for a few days but not permanently.

Geez Guys, I thought I would be overloaded with ideas.

I got a better idea! There is a company called "GoPro" It is a helmet cam/ auto cam. It is 100% water proff. It is a 180* wide angle H/D camrea. Can record upto 2 hours of footage.

Here is the site...

GoPro Official Store: Wearable Digital Cameras for Sports

Heres the best part, They sponsored me in motocross last year, and this year. I get a 50% discount from them.

PM me if your serious.

did this in my rodeo, had a sony waterproof bulletcam underneath with a magnet mount I made for it so I can move it's location... having a custom computer system in the rodeo, I just had a video capture card and captured the video/pictures that way. Wasn't too much of use, more of a cool factor seeing the suspension and everything do it's thing while offroading or taking sharp turns on the highway,

I was on a JAL flight out of Japan once and they had a forward mounted camera that would pan down after takeoff they would stream to the cabin while they were over japan. pretty neat.

Anyway, where ever you mount the camera, be sure its not a distraction and the local law cant tell its on. many places its illegal to have a driver visable video monitor in operation when the vehicle is moving.
