cabin air filter

I have a 2002 Frontier XE, 2WD 2.4L. It appears that it doesn't have cabin air filters - can see where they might go but don't want to start cutting before I'm sure. Any guidance - r it appears filter go in vertically as suggested in 2002 manual. Thanks for any help.

Right on

I never even knew there was a in cabin air filter. With the information provided I will be replacing mines.:)
On 2nd gens, which way do they go in? Which way is the air flow? Up or down? I feel like an idiot for not knowing this. Duuuuhhhhh........
On mine, (2nd gen) flow is down, if I remember correctly. But it's been a while now since I put a filter in it so I could be wrong.
If you can see the center, inner part of a "squirrel cage" style blower fan in there--that's the area that draws in air--and it is blown outward from the perimeter.

I changed mine and was not sure on the air flow, so i turned on the blower. Stick your hand in (be carful and keep it where the filters go) and feel the air. Thats all i did, be careful as you can break the plastic tab pretty easily, mines not hanging on by much.
Thanks guys. Now I don't feel so dumb for not knowing.

Dirty side up, airflow indicator down.
I busted mine. Holding on with electrical tape for now. There is an eyelet in the molding of the filter housing and access door that I will put in some type of fastener eventually.

I did that with my last Frontier. I ended up getting a small bolt with wing nut....worked perfectly.
Mine busted first time too. I cut a little notch in top of the latch with a Dremel tool to hold a zip (nylon wire tie) tie so I can slip/snap it off and back on.
plastic tab X

I busted my tab first try! I ended up putting a bolt & nut on the cover (on the backside) to hold it shut. When I got it from carmax there was no cabin filter
