When I got this truck a month or so ago, I immediately noticed that the ride was bouncy like it needed shocks and the brakes were soft like the pedal wasn't pumping up.

So one of the first things I decided to do was replace the shocks and brakes. Well, it didn't help. The shocks I took off were in terrible shape, probably the originals. :)

The brakes weren't that bad but I decided to replace them anyway.

First, can any of you old timers confirm that this is just how these trucks ride?

Second, is this normal for the brakes too? Or do I have a booster problem?

Pedal not pumping up, after pads, you have a stuck caliper pin. Assuming you blead the brakes Upper and lower need to move freely. Pins, seize and brackets are cheap.

Will judge my '00 XE 4x2 as driving like a station wagon...soft/non-truck-like. Can't say it was bouncy, though.
Nissan trucks have a soft feel to the brake pedal. Once use to it, it is easier to modulate, imho. YMMV

Bracket and pins is an ez fix.

The front end of mine felt like a roller coaster on dips at highway speeds so I replaced the front shocks with standard Monroes. No difference. These trucks need stiffer front shocks than what standard replacement shocks offer.

What are you comparing it to? Compared to my car, my truck feels like I'm driving my house.

As far as shocks, I put Monroe's in the back and Gabriel's -big, beefy Gabriel's, much larger than the stockers - in the front. Night and day improvement.

Do you have a lot of aftermarket stuff on the front? Winch, brush bar, ect. Mine has nothing added, and i love , the way my truck rides. No bounce at all, and I have some RR tracks, that I don't get airborne, but you can feel it in your gut. And lands just fine. I broke both rear shocks and that was a clown car ride, until I got the, fixed.

I was noticing today that it seems like front is real problem.

Do you have a part# for the big and beefy's?

I pulled and inspected the calipers today. Pins are fine and the pistons actuate just fine.

When I was checking them afterwards I noticed that I could get them to pump up for a second.

Looks I need to do a complete bleed. :(

Do a Youtube search, there a a ton of ez fixes, to do a bleed. Good luck.

My bad, I didn't notice your a 98. I'm a 02 with abs, not hard just a little complicated. Good luck.

Did a second bleed today and the brakes are finally back to normal.

On mine the ABS has a second bleeder at each front wheel.

Bouncy Update.

I finally got a chance to look at the bounce today. Since the front sits noticeably lower than the rear, I wanted to try adjusting the torsion bars to see if it affected the bounce. I prefer the truck to sit level anyway.

I adjusted the bolts about 3/4 inch on each side. This raised the front just about an inch at the fenders.

And...a significant reduction in bounce! Now its like Shift_Rush said, soft like a station wagon and not truck like. I can live with this until I do shocks again.
