I can't wait for the big lifts to come out and really don't like the stock ride hight of my '05 4X4. I was wondering if I could get some opinions for the rear end lift.

I have done blocks before (easy and reliable)
I have done add a leafs (a little harder and ride is stiffer, less body role though.)

What about a shackle lift?? I have heard you get a little better articulation but how is city driving?? Just wondering, I am not going to do any rock crawling soon and I am still new to off-roading.

Call me Jay.

I am just like you.
I've done blocks. Blocks do cause axle wrap.
I did the AAL's. To hard of a ride.
So I well be going with shackles.

Block's or Shackles

Ive had block's, add a leaf's,shackles, hell my first truck had air shock's and out of all of those I would choose shackles you will have the stock ride and no axle wrap problem's. However if your not planing to carry heavy load's in the bed. Install a progressive spring pack. I think prerunner greg is comming out with a set of deaver spring's. You remove the bottom overload spring and replace it with 2 or 3 thinner arched springs, this will give some lift and will absorb bumps and give a better ride all around. But you wont be carrying anything very heavy. The suspension will cycle smoothly but wount carry a heavy load. my .02

thanks for the link. There is more to the AC/4x4.com website than I thought. I found a few more packages at:

Sounds like folks are leaning towards the shackles for the rear but what about the rear shocks? What are the differences between the Rancho RS5000 ($275), RS9000X($340) and the Bilsteins 5100 HD ($315).

According to the web site, replacing the coils vs. spacers prevents contact between the upper a-arm with the upper coil bucket. If folks choose the spacers over replacing the coils is this because of increased installation difficulty. Why risk the bang since this set up is not that more expensive than the spacer kit?

it is preference. the spacer kits dont change factory ride and are easy to install. the coils are harder to install and are also stiffer than stock.

can you explain alittle more about this axle wrap?
ive seen a few people post it here, but im new to trucks, :|

i also read that shackles messes with the pinion angle.

how big of a concern are axle wrap and pinion angle with a lift under 3 inches :)

Got my AC shackles in today. Fast shipping, ordered them Friday afternoon.

I was surprised they were 9" long, the stock ones are 6". I guess it takes 3" of length to get 1.5" of lift?

Has anyone installed these shackles yet? Any problems?

I've had no vibration issues with my blocks. I'm thinking about going up a little more next year and will probably add shackles for the rear. They will definitely be AC's shackles, calmini look cheap, no crossbar, no thanks.

As for spacer vs. coils. I like the idea of the coils better I think but at the same time, you will lose some downward travel but gain upward...seems like it would make it easier for bigger tires to rub when stuffed. I've got the spacers and I'm happy with them.

Greg sells a quality product and has great customer service...now if he'd just add more frontier parts and change the name to frontierspecialist.com...

What are the differences between these shocks:

Rancho RS9000X $$$$
Bilsteins 5100 HD $$$
Rancho RS5000 $$

The rancho RS9000X can be adjusted from inside the truck. Does anyone have any experience with any of these shocks?

my preference would be the Bilstein 5100s. they have variable dampening which gives you a smooth ride on road and performance off road. this means the dampening gets stronger as the shock gets compressed. in lay man's terms, stiff when it needs to be and soft all other times. 5100s also have an internal reservoir to resist shock fade.

the RS9000s seem like a good shock. never ran them though

I just installed mine last night no problems at all and the truck looks nice once they are installed

So is it safe to say that I'd be better off getting shackles for offroading where as blocks would be more risky?

Shackles are a little safer, but blocks would suffice in 90% of off-roading situations. Blocks do allow for a greater chance of axle wrap.

Use high quality bushings.
