Blacking out emblems?

Planning on using duplicolor metalcast to do my emblems and was wondering do i have to sand them first. I would assume so but the Duplicolor says to just spray with the base coat then layer with the color. What should i do?

you need to scuff sand and spray them with a good plastic primer then the metal cast.
What grit would you recommend using?
nothing too coarse, otherwise the paint won't be able to hide the scuffing. idk... nothing under 150?
Something pretty fine. I painted some 2nd gen emblems for my tailgate and just scuffed them up real good and sprayed 3 coats of self etching primer and 3 coats of some kind of gloss black. They turned out really good. Prep took like 20 minutes.
Ok so i should wet sand with 800 grit, put a couple base layers then a few layers of the metalcast paint.
I didn't wet sand. I just scuffed the chrome stuff up until it had a brushed aluminum look to it. I couldn't even get to some parts of the letters with the sandpaper and the paint stuck to them just fine.

Also, th letters are plastic so I don't know how that metalcast stuff will adhere. I looked it up and it says it is for metal objects.
3M scotch pad. red or green, either should do the job.
how does the rear emblem come off?

just pop it off?
yes the rear just take your time and it pops off
Sounds good! Will hit up Checkers later. Anyone try out Duplicolor Metalcast Smoke yet? If it looks good on the emblems i might paint my blower too.
Arent the emblems attached by some sort of tape or glue or something. How are you going to reattach them. Ive heard of using that 3M red tape to reattach. I was thinking of doing this on my truck and painting them black. Thought it might look good on my truck instead of just debadging it.
3M automotive grade double sided tape. Mine have been on there since summer and they are holding up flawlessly.
Thanks for the tips on sanding. 2 quick questions..

1) Does the "Circle/Nissan" emblem on the grill come off the same as the rear "Nissan" word emblem?
2) Considering a black powdercoat for all my emblems. Any recommendations on brand of paint?

Dont know about the powder coating. But the front emblem does pop off. I never removed the rear one. When I removed my grill to paint it black, The was little plastic fingers that had to be flexed in-word, and then it just falls out.

Powdercoating requires baking to cure, plastic emblems would melt. Painting is pretty much the only option. As for brand of paint, as long as you get a good primer and a good clearcoat, the color doesn't matter a whole lot.
i just ordered some krylon fusion in a satin black that im gonna use one of these days, ill let you guys know how it turns out
this sounds like a simple yet promising mod!

in work i have access to a sand blaster (we blast metal nuts & bolts) - could i just crank the pressure down enough (@<20psi) to get the chrome off instead of using sand paper & would i still need a primer after blasting it ?

THANKS
Im gonna blast mine, hopefully it works
