Since the locker only works in 4lo it's kind of a moot point since most ABS and traction control functions are disabled in 4lo. Personally I switch the VDC off in sand when in 2x or 4hi as it cuts power when it sees wheel spin and sand is more fun with copious amounts of wheel spin, though that's obviously not the best way to keep from getting stuck in sand, especially for sand newbs >:D
But the VDC off button is only avail in '10+ model years I think.
But, as you already mentioned, properly airing down ALL tires is the biggest key to driving in sand.

I think the way you handle your steering also plays an important role to ensure a smooth ride in the sand. I always leave only the back one on but that too, depends on the condition of the ground. In conclusion, I would say that it eventually boils down to your driving techniques and sand conditions at that moment.

What would you recommend airing down the stock BFG's on my SV for beach driving? I'm heading down to the outer banks in NC in a couple weeks and plan on doing some beach driving while there. I've never done anything worthy of airing down with these tires so I don't know how far to go.

I've done a lot of beach driving with my old rugged trails. They did fine, in fact, I think an aired down high flotation street tire is pretty ideal in sand (in a lot of situations). I never turned off any traction control, but I was simply driving from one place to another, not acting crazy.
