Bad Sound at 3k RPM

I have an 05 Frontier with 31,000 miles on it. Sometimes when I hit around 3,000 rpm and i'm accelerating I hear a bad sound. It's a rough sound almost like a really bad rattle? It seems to happen more when it's cold? Any idea what this is and how serious it is?

heat shield most likely
Mine is almost brand new a makes a rattle around 2k, think its a heat shield.

Maybe...
No P0420 or P0430 codes are thrown?.. could be your pre-cats .. or cats going "pooof!!" get underneath and bang on em and see if they rattle.
according to my friends that work for a nissan dealer here in san diego area it might be the upper intake manifold, im taking my 08 in friday to have them look at it.

Keep us posted. There was a TSB for this, but I believe it only affected 05's.
takin the fronty up to nissan in the morning i will have updates on what their solution is in the afternoon
been w/out computer a few days.

got my truck back and the tech could not replicate the noise. so i have to schedule an apointment to leave it with them over night.

lamesauce
Is your truck a manual or automatic?

mine is a 6 speed manual, and it doesnt sound like anything from a transmission, it is most definetly from the engine.
The throw out bearing on my '01sc makes a similar noise. It's been off and on for the last 9 years. Worse when it's cold.
Loud rattle sounds like its coming from front, engine bay, firewall?
Especially under hard acceleration and sounds metallic?

My wifeys 6spd X and my Truck both do it and I haven't been able to duplicate it enough to effectively pinpoint noise and our shop seems to have misplaced the chassis ears :censor:

My noises are not exhaust related but are metallic rattling. And I haven't heard this sound on any customer vehicles. It almost sounds like a primary timing chain rattle which pisses me off. Anyways I have seen almost everything on thes trucks but I am still trying to get this figured out. I may have to wait till I do the secondary tensioners and check for any issues with the primary chain parts. And its definitely not the VIAS valve rattle. This may be limited to 6spd trucks.
My truck does this sporadically as well. At first I thought it was valve tick or something but it sounded more tingy than that. Only happen under load at 3k.

Thing is though this happens for a couple days then disappears completely for a month or two then comes back randomly. Has happened once in the summer and twice in the winter, so no real correlation to when it will happen on temperature.

This led me to believe it was either a heatshield or something else under the hood having a vibration caused by a certain rpm, or just a rock or pebble that got stuck up under the hood somewhere, I like to blame that big plastic cover that companies think all engines should have for no reason. I do drive 60 miles a day through Wyoming, theres a constant thrashing of dust, rocks, and stone along these roads.

My previous 93 Nissan Pathfinder had an issue with the something concerning the bolts of the intake manifolds or exhaust manifolds, cant remember which since it was about 6 years ago I had the thing, that would cause a similar rattle at 3k rpms. It was nothing to worry about I do remember that, just made that noise. It was a constant thing though, so who knows.

Ive got to bring my truck in to get the TPMS system looked at under warranty, so maybe Ill ask em about it as well and try to see whats up.

I have an 05 Nismo and have been experiencing the same problem. I get a rattle noise right around 2200 rpm. At least 2200 is where it is loudest. I have done some research online.

This what I found on consumerguideauto.com
" Engine noise: A rattle noise from the 4.0L engine at around 2,000 rpm is the power valve actuator dithering and can only be corrected by replacing the manifold complete with new valve. (2005)"

It doesn't say that it will cause any damage. Either way I don't like the noise. Some time soon I will get it to the shop to see what it will take to repair it.
This sounds almost exactly like the problem I had with my truck. I had this "noise" happen when I would accelerate at 2500-3000 rpm. The "noise" would only happen every once in a while and it turns out the problem is the clutch release or throw out bearing. One of the two. Anyways, my brother has a 2005 Xterra with the 6 speed with the same problem.

I think this could be it if you have a manual transmission.
I dont have a manual. Mine seems to do it sporadically too as when I took it to the dealer and had the mgr ride with me it wouldnt make the noise. Seems to be temperature related or ??? Last night it was 40 deg and it still wouldnt do it.

that noise is the VIAS valve it affects 05 model year. You can remove the valve and glue it in place where it sits in the manifold to stop it from rattling. I am sure the TSB is posted here somewhere. There is a special 3M glue you are supposed to use that takes hours to dry. I have done it to mine and customers and had good results.
