bad Hawk Breakpads?

933 Views 8 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  Nitroracer
I had my brake pads replaced with Hawk Pads as well as rotors resurfaced - and within a week they were grinding / eating away at my rotors.

the mechanic is blaming the hawk pads being too "stiff" - has anyone else had a bad experience using them?

Usually a high performance pad like that will cause more rotor wear. The extra stopping power has to come from somewhere since you didn't increase surface area of the pad. Its logical that the pad will be more aggressive to account for the extra power. On my last Frontier I bought EBC green stuff pads and they were doing to same thing. Added wear just comes with added performance.

yeah figured.... is there a rotor set I could run with them so they hold up (and also not grind?)
I've never swapped to anything higher than OEM grade rotors so I don't have an answer for you. Maybe a more performance orientated rotor would hold up better? Not sure.
well thats extremely fast to got through break pads, and hawk seems to be popular brand too.

I changed mine out with a kit called Power Stop K4062 Front and Rear One-Click Brake Kit. I got it through Amazon, but rockauto, etc sells it too. I put them on myself and it was pretty easy.
I've had them on about 5 months now and very happy. No break dust like oem's.
I would guess cheap oem rotors are more likely the problem, assuming you followed the break in instructions for the pads. I've got a set of hawk hps pads on my car, the have 95k miles on them with the same rotors that I changed same time the pads went on, but they were good cryo treated slotted rotors and never had a problem, still probably got a good 25-30k life left in them.
Ran Hawks on my A4 w/o issue. Not sure on compound though, believe 1 step up from stock IIRC?
Consider getting new rotors. I recommend the PowerSlot rotors.
On my race cars we look at rotors as the wear item rather than the pads. Buy the cheap rotors from Rockauto and run good pads. Replace the rotors as needed.

The frontier has weak brakes to start with so any upgrade is welcomed.
