What would cause the automatic transmission slip from First to Second?.

Low level of tranny fluid might contribute. Hopefully it's that easy of a fix.

What kind of ATF is used? FYI, Dexron III/Mercon is fine for topping off the ATF level, but should not be used for servicing, as it has been found to cause valve sticking in the control valve body. NissanMatic Type "D" ATF or an ATF recommended for Dexron II applications should be used for servicing the trans fluid. Most aftermarket synthetics will work fine, including Valvoline Maxlife ATF and Castrol Transmax Multi-import ATF.

From the service manual symptom chart for slipping, 1-2 shift:

Numbers are in order of inspection. Numbers in off vehicle column mean that the transmission must be removed from vehicle to perform inspection.
* means that valve is suspected of malfunction.

On vehicle service:

1. Fluid level and quality
2. Control linkage
3. Line pressure
4. Throttle wire
5. Accumulator 1-2
6. Control valve:
*pressure regulator valve
*pressure modifier valve
*throttle valve and detent valve
*kickdown modifier valve

Off vehicle service:

7. Brake band
