looking at these:

https://www.4x4parts.com/catalog/billet-aluminum-wheel-spacer-p-5314.html

i was going to roll with the cragar steelies, but i like my grey stock six spoke wheels. if i could use the spacers to move the tires out a bit to look right, i might go that route instead. just concerned about strength, safety, etc. stock backspace is 5.25", right? so these would in effect give me 4" backspace?

well, i found another set of spidertrax for $69 (set of two), so it would be about the same, but i would be able to keep the stock wheels, which i like. i also have near new tires that may look funny on a wider rim (31x10.50 - i would get 15x8 ).

any input on the strength or safety?

they are safe. Although, you may find cheaper on ebay. Friends from the 240sx land(forum world) use them alot for wheel filament. They also drift on the same setup, so you know they can take a beating.

Please excuse my blatant ignorance on this subject.

Wheel spacers bolt on between the axle and the wheel to make it easier for larger wheel/tire combos to fit without rubbing, etc. Right?

Lug Centric (Early Model)

Spidertrax sells them for $100 plus shipping and they are 1.5". They are safe. I have been running them on my Samurai for over a year now with no ill effects. And yes I have taken it offroad fairly often, just no rock crawling with it.....yet.

Just make sure you check them after a couple days to see that all the lug nuts are still tight.

incorrect

they actually cause MORE rubbing

they cause the turning radius that your wheel does to be pushed farther out, pushing your tire more into the fender
