Hello My Name Is D-E-A-N-S-O-N And I Have A New Idea For All My Fellow Nissan Frontier Owners. I Designed A New Air Intake Setup For All 2005 To 2010 Nissan Frontiers With The 4.0 V6. I Wanted The Advantages Of A Air Intake But Think Spending $240 To $360 For Over Priced Plastic And A Filter Was Wrong. Any Suport In Getting The My Air Intake Idea Up And Running Would Be Great. Please Send Any Feedback My Way. (Good Or Bad)

Thanks D-E-A-N-S-O-N

I see no advantage to your design.
1. It pulls air from the engine compartment - HOT air, thus defeating the cold air intake concept
2. It uses the stock airway which is full of kinks and turns - creating turbulence and slowing air flow

The closed box Volant is a great system, I love mine. That's the way I see it.

biggest advantage to the aftermarket systems is the molded smooth piping replacing the flow resisting accordion tubes.

Also what jag and roastbeef said about the smooth flow of air. Anything restrictive like the accordion shape of your intake tube will affect "improved" air flow.

Close off that box so its a true CAI, fab up a piece of aluminum or some type of light weight PVC to replace the stock tube and you're in business.

Kudo's for trying!

Did you make that box yourself? If so, then you probably have the ability to see this through...it looks professionally made.

The box should be closed, like the Volant...if you can get it to perform like the Volant at a cheaper price, that's the best possible outcome. I have researched most of the CAI's, and the Volant seems to be the only one that actually adds power throughout the torque curve, instead of taking from the bottom to add to the top (of rev range).

If you made this box, then you can figure out how to mold in a MAF sensor port, and also a straight section just downstream to eliminate the "accordion". There will need to be a flexible fitting next, obviously. Wouldn't braided SS look nice?

Volant also has 2 parts it pulls from. The fender like yours and the stock, and it has a lower pipe that opens to the inside of the grill, and it is like "ram air".

I think your on the right track and the ability is there. I am a mechanical person, but I've never really worked with plastics/rubber.

Another thing that helps a CAI is to actually lower the temp of the box itself, i have been doing this to BMW's for years and it helps, I basically dynamat the box on the outside to keep engine heat to a minimum on the inside of the air box.

Interesting...do you have IAT sensor readings before/after doing this mod? How many degrees cooler does this make the IAT?

K&N/AEM from day one with all the cars I've owned... I always read so much science went into the design that I thought making one wouldn't be beneficial AT ALL. They test and test and test... design after design... IDK if you'll get real power gains out of it, but if you dyno it before and after and match the results of a name brand intake then... only then... will you know that you really succeeded and beat the man!!!.

Unfortunately No, there is no IAT on the older bimmers and thats what I mainly play with, there is however an article on a newer 5 series with the 8 cyl that they managed to squeeze a lot of HP out of with only intake and exhaust mods, the chip they used only really removed the speed limiter. The gains were pretty substantial by just cooling down the factory airbox. I will see if I can find the link.

My older cars (80's) have always been very happy with cooling down the airbox and using larger Air Flow Meters (pre MAF), not only does it help the performance but I have gotten good gains in economy if I can keep my foot out of it. It also helps that the airbox design is pretty good right from the get go unlike our seemingly restrictive ones.
