Any one out there with an '09 Frontier ever added an aftermarket amp and sub to the OEM 6 disc radio? I'm not at all pleased with the stock stereo. Infact, it sounds muddy and is missing in the MID frequencies and missing BADLY in the highs. The "sub" section is a joke as RF put 2-5" spkrs. they call subs in this system. I have an '09 4x4 crew cab. Any input?

this is why ill never buy a factory "premium" stereo, since they are much more difficult to add equipment to because of factory amps and odd ohm loads.

my suggestion, gut the whole thing and replace it all.

however, i am a bit of a nut. you can add a sub and amp easily with a line output converter. but that wont solve the muddy and missing highs.

find out what ohm load the factory stuff is and swap them. nissan has been on a 2 ohm kick as of late, so you might be able to swap in some infinity reference components and clear up the mids and highs.

if the head unit isnt to your liking, you can replace it, but chances are youll have to replace everything else as well to be compatible.

good luck

Amp and sub installation

Hi everyone. I'm new to the forum but not new to the Frontier. I just traded in my 2005 4 door for a 2011 crew cab. I was allowed to remove my sub and amps from my old truck. I want to add them to the new head unit. I don't know yet it it has low-level outputs or not. Any help here would be appriciated.

Line converter

Thank you for your reply ScottXGTR . Does the line converter give me the same sound quality, or close to it? I have a 4 channel amp for door speakers and a sub amp for my 12in sub box. At this point I will be staying with factory HU for awhile. It is an up-graded unit from the standard HU. (6 disc changer,xm radio, bluetooth, steering wheel controls, exc...) You probably know which one I have. I don't want to loose that stuff. Thank you again for helping....SW1

Add to factory systems

JL audio makes a great product called the cleansweep that allows the addition to and improvement of factory systems. In 06 when I bought my truck I think the factory equipment lasted all of about a week. As soon as my wife (which I got a month before the truck) turned her head, I switched everything out. At the time it was alpine and JL now it's an iPad for the source and that runs to a cleansweep for attenuation. But thats all another thread. Check out the cleansweep for factory upgrades using the factory source. It also allows you to add an aux like an iPod or iPad.

line out converters used to be crap (some still are). the quality of the sound depends on the quality of the unit and the quality of the installation. there are some nicer units out there such as the clean sweep, rockford has the 3sixty, etc. they do a better job than the $20 scoche ones from walmart.

that said, most peoples ears cant tell the difference in a high quality unit versus a low quality unit. so spend as much as you are comfortable with. if you find you are one of the people who can hear the difference, youll be ripping the stock unit out and never looking back.

I guess all I can say to sway you is check it out on YouTube. This is not really a line converter as much as it is a signal reconstructer. This will take a signal from the source, (if it's a factory radio, usually heavily equalized to make up for the lack of effort put into the stereo). And creates a flat signal. To much to explain. Check it out. And at 200 dollars +\- it better be quality. And to me it sounds great.
