It can be replaced, but the clutch coil will be the culprit. The clutch plate and coil should be replaced together. Make sure you have the proper voltage at the coil before replacing. Too high a voltage drop and the coil will not be able to create a strong enough magnetic field to hold in the clutch plate to turn the compressor, hence the slipping. Have the system pressure's checked. There is a possibility you may also have a bad hub bearing or compressor too.
