I was wondering on what is your preffered method on engaging four-wheel drive. I am asking because i've always engaged mine from 2wd to 4 hi while moving at a semi slow pace. Now a friend of mine says thats it's better if i come to a complete stop then engage it. So which method is the safest. Thanks.

going from 2 to 4hi can be done at speeds up to 60mph i believe. but i wouldnt suggest that. any speed that your at during wheelin you will be fine. which is normally under 30. only thing is switching from anything to 4 low, you need to be stopped and in N.

I usually put mine in four wheel at a complete stop. I think its a little easier on the transfer case and front differential. Also I know the best way to remove it from four wheel is to stop, turn it back to 2wd then go in reverse for 20-30ft.

I don't what year you have, but the 05 frontiers come with shift on the fly system. This system will not engage if you are not moving.

I used to own a 03 Nissan Pathfinder and now my 05 Fronty with 4X4 and I am constanly shifting from 2 to 4 wheel dirve due to weather conditions and I normally make sure I'm under 60. I'm sure if it was hard on the transfer case the manual would state to do it under certain speeds.

i've read this before from other posters but i have never had to go into reverse to get out of 4wd.

shifting into 4-Hi can be done while moving and below 60mph like the manual says.
shifting to 4-Lo needs to be done while in neutral and not moving.

shifting out of 4-Hi can also be done while moving but the vehcle wont go back into 2wd until there is no more binding on the transfer case (meaning no acceleration) i usually just let go of the pedal or brake.

shifting out of 4-Lo needs to be done while in neutral and not moving. i have never had to reverse any distance to get of 4-Lo to 4-Hi

ive heard the reverse trick and one time in my old ranger i had to do it, but it was having problems the transfer case was going out of it, but thats the only time ive ever gone in reverse to get out, i just shift and go and it always pops out, if it doesnt i let off the gas and slow to a slow roll about 5mph and it kicks out within about 5 feet, but ive only had that happen once or twice, normally it pops out about 2 feet after i start moving now matter how hard i get into the gas.

I had to do it in my old '85 Nissan. The manual said to back up 3 to 10 feet to disengage the auto hubs. I think that is why people think they have to do it.

From my personal exprience with my truck, If I put it in reverse to take it out of 4wd it pops out right away. If I do it while moving it takes about a mile to pop out.
a mile? are you kidding? you should really have that checked, it shouldnt do that. only once maybe twice has it ever taken more than 10 feet for my truck to pop out, normally it goes out as soon as i hit the gas.

but a mile doesnt seem right at all. what truck is this in?

I checked my 06 4x4 today in my buddies gravel driveway and only had to move a couple of inches to engauge and disengauge, if you listen closely when you turn the switch you can hear it, very smooth indeed, awesome truck :D . The owners manual states 62.5 as the highest speed to engauge in.
