2016 Frontier SV 4x4
Switched from 4H to 2 wheel and the top of the 4x4 display showing the front two tires..started flashing. Drove a few miles and heard a "thunk" and the flashing went away showing 2 wheel drive. did it again yesterday... What's going on?

Could be normal; what were the surfaces you were driving on and how fast were you going when you switched in/out of 4HI?

I've found cranking your steering wheel left and right will get you out of 4wd faster.
Going in a straight line takes for forever.

Its all in the owners manual.
When shifting into/out of 4x4 (hi or low) it flashes till fully engaged. It will take longer to shift if there is driveline bind. Turning S'es will reduce bind faster, as will getting 2 tires on dirt or snow. Also works: coasting or blipping the throttle, short distance of reverse.
The thunk was coming out of 4x4.

Are your rear tires worn a lot more than the fronts? That difference would keep the transfer case under load and keep it from shifting.

Just blip the throttle or stab the brakes quickly or even pull on the ebrake handle quickly (hold the button of course), one of those will do the trick and relieve the pressure and let the transfer case shift. Also rotate your tires if they are lopsided as that would be my guess as to the cause.
