Have you thought of throwing in a turbo or super to get you those extra ponies for towing?

get a bigger truck. even if you can pull a camper with a more powerful motor you won't be able to stop it too well

my truck is a 2004 cc 4x4,and im looking at towing 5500 pounds so stopping shouldnt be an issue with trailer brakes. the 3.3 is just weak on hills. i havent found much in aftermarket support for the 3.3 so i thought a 4.0 engine and the trans. would be just what the doctor ordered. also the body and interior are 98% perfect.

ive read that even wiht a s/c ill only pick up 30 hp, not much more with a turbo. all ive read says the 3.3 is just weak.
3.3 sure aint weak, nissan just restriced them for emission, thats what i think. all sane, a custom on the suengine would be cheaper then to just to replace the entire engine. built and tuned right, the turbo vg33 will more than likely outperform the vq40. who cares if the truck is smaller, with proper trailer brakes, the first gen frontier should have no issues stopping.

i think it would be easier to swap in a vq35 off a pathy. There are a lot of similarities between a frontier an a pathfinder. Also there's a crapload of aftermarket support for the vq, unlike the gay vg.

personally a stock vq35 will run circles around a modded vg33.

doubt it... the vg is popular but today people are all about the vq engine due to it being the main v6 for all nissan models. i love the vq engine, but the vg is a damn strong engine. as i said in the "v8 swap" thread, these engines are for tourque not highend power. my vg33 does everything it needs to do and then some.

the supercharger nissan offered from the factory is a joke. dont waste your time.

a turbo set up would be more effective, and you can add as much power as the internals can stand with a big enough snail.

ive heard of people measuring if it will fit and if i recall the answer was yes, but barely. a manual trans will put the shifter pretty far back, but whatever. vq35 pathy shares little resemblance to the frontier so it would be as much work as the 4.0.

youll soon find the cost of upgrading your engine to something else isnt a cheap expense. a v8 swap tends to be the cheapest because you can lose a lot of the electronic madness you would have to deal with from, lets just say the vq family of engines. so, dump money that youll never get back into an old truck , or buy a new one that will hold some value for a few extra years.

Yeah it might just be easier to trade in your frontier for something a little stronger, is the Nissan super the only super option for the first gens tho?

Either way a custom turbo setup would be far better anyways

what mods,if any do you have on your vg33? ive looked and the only things i can find are exhaust & cold air intake. i think jet is offering a programmer now,at least they show it on their website, but i havn't seen anything else anywhere else.

It would be a MUCH better idea to just upgrade to something bigger. 5500lbs is still a good bit of weight for a 2nd gen. A V6 is just not an ideal towing rig. It will do the job, just not well.

ehh look at the stock power figures... the vq35 owns the vg in the torque department.

You keep saying the vg is strong and blah blah blah.. however i've never had a single issue with my vq30de. It has over 250k in my maxima ive run a 100 shot of nitrous, hundreds of 1/8 and 1/4 mile passes, and rev the crap outta of it. No issues. I'm waiting for it to blow or something, but nothing.
