An elderly relative just bought a 2017 Nissan Frontier 4x4. With a similar model, sometimes he'd forget to take the truck out of 4wd hi into 2wd and after driving an extended amount on pavement, damaged the truck.

He doesn't need 4x4, but the dealer talked him into it....

We'd like to disable 4x4 mode without wrecking anything such that if there is a true need, i.e. snow, it can be enabled again.

Is there a fuse or relay one can pull to prevent the 4wd switch from actuating 4x4 that is easy enough to replace later?

Thanks!

Make sure it is in 2WD.
Unplug the transfer case control module.
No lights, no 4WD, plug it in, works again. Just a few meaningless communication errors if the codes are ever checked with a good code reader (dealer).

Sounds like your "elderly" relative should not be driving at all if they cannot make proper decisions.
