Can anyone tell me if the gas mileage remaining that is shown on the odometer is accurate or just a rough estimate. Seems like I have a lot of gas left but the mileage shows that I can't go far. I have not ran it dry yet.::smile::

I don't have that option on my 2009 but I've always thought that the gas light comes on too soon compared to what the gas gauge shows left in the tank. Which do you trust? I tend to panic once the light comes on and I fill up as quickly as possible.

My 12 has about 4 gallons left when the light comes on. I'm sure yours is estimated low so you don't run out.
I'm sure they underestimate too. Sort of off topic but my brother-in-law has a Grand Cherokee with a Hemi. His said 0 miles left and he kept driving while I was in the car. I nearly had to go see a therapist afterwards.
There is a fudge factor built into pretty much every vehicle I've ever driven. Also to answer your original question, the information is estimated based on fuel usage stats for the last however many miles it keeps it for. Typically based off the last 50 miles of driving (then of course that information is plugged in and used to calculate your range based on how many miles you've driven since filling or how much fuel is left in the tank or whatever math it uses, each car is a little different). My wife's Honda has a trip meter that resets if you fill the tank full at a gas station (neato), and it uses that to calculate range, and my Frontier doesn't have this feature.
Thks. I had 6 gallons left and it said I only had 70 miles left. Must be an estimation.
My '15 SV generally has a tad over 4 gallons remaining in the tank once the low fuel light comes on.
Mine has between 3-4 gallons left when the light first comes on. That's enough to make it another 50 miles which should get you to a gas station.

Your 2015 shows what range is remaining? Am I missing something with mine?
5~5½ gallons left once the light comes on. Providing that the 21.1 gallon capacity is correct.

This feature is trim dependent. Pro4x and LE I think are the only ones who get it.
My 2015 Desert Runner has DTE aka distance to empty. As well as the "trip computer"..
On my 2010, once the light comes on, i try to not go over 40 additional miles at that point. Usually if i go around 40 miles, it takes 19.1~ to fill the tank back up.
My 2014 has about four gallons left when the indicator light comes on. That translates to 60 to 80 miles til empty depending upon city or highway driving.
Fuel cools your fuel pump. Running your tank super low creates heat in your fuel pump. Heat destroys fuel pumps. Fuel pumps are expensive and a PITA to replace!!! 1/4 tank is empty for me!
Fuel flowing through a fuel pump also cools it. Just don't leave the truck On when empty.
When the light comes on the DTE meter should say 20 miles to empty. It will continue to count down to 10 before it starts flashing "-----". I've run mine 30 miles past "0" miles on several occasions. Of course that was before I "modified" my own mpgs to reach the optimal 12.2 ::smile::
Now I only run it 10-15 miles past 0 if I need to. But I usually fill up with 1/4 tank to go.
Ya zinko mine shows a number of expected mileage and the number goes down as the fuel is eaten up. I was told that was what it represents. Thanks for the replies.
