80W90 is semi-synthetic only, 75w90 is full / 100% synthetic, except for possibly Amsoil. I used 75w90 Motul, which is 100% synthetic.

You can get full synthetic 80w-90. Have always wonder why they spec this odd ball oil for the front diff instead of the more common 75-90. That 5W cold hardly makes a difference.

I just use 75w-90, as it is something I keep around.

There is no scientific engineering reason, most likely the random choice from which ever engineer was assigned to pick lubrication spec's for the service-owners manuals, and he just cut and pasted what was used in prior years. You could most likely use 30 weight motor oil in there and go 200K miles with no issues if you didn't tow heavy loads.
