I was driving home last night, went to step on the gas and it started poping through the intake, almost like it was hitting the rev limiter, I looked down and noticed the tach was dead, but all the rest of the gauges worked. I tried to get on it a couple more times, and the same thing happed. I was about to pull over, and the tach came back on, and it was fine. Has anyone else had any problems like this. I've owned this truck for a long time, it just turned 100k and now all these stupid problems are starting

was it raining out? or extreme high humidity?

my best guess is that moisture got on the distributor and caused arcing

pop that cap off and clean the contacts

no rain, no humidity I had been driving for about a half an hour with no problems at all, then like I said, the tach dropped to zero, and I coulnt give it any gas or it would start popping, and then the tach cam back on, and it was fine. I just checked all the connections and wires to the distributer and everything looks fine. The distributer's new, just did plugs and wires and everything else about a month ago and its been running great.

take it by your local parts chain and have them scan for codes. Sounds like your timing is off, but should be computer controlled so not sure why its out. maybe something related to the engine speed sensor.

Did you change the distributor or just the cap?

New distributer(from Nissan) just had the timing belt replaced by a nissan mechanic, and he checked everything. The only code its throwing is for a KS

odd. Knock sensor just killed my fuel mileage, but didn't cause any other issues.
My fuel milage went to **** too, But other than that its been running good. This is the first time this has happened, and it was just for a minute. then it was fine again. I'm gonna check for a loose connection or something. the way the tach just stopped working makes me think something lost power for a minute

I cleaned the MAF, I talked to a friend of mine who's a nissan tech, He wants me to start by cleaning up the main ground connected to the cylinder head. and see if it starts doing it again. I'm also wondering if maybe it's a bad crank sensor. I don't know, but it sucks when I don't want to drive it far, in case I cant make it back

Sometimes a bad ground/battery will cause things to act crazy like that. check your grounds from batt. to block, block to frame. also check your batt voltage level with a volt meter... test the battery the same way with the engine running to test your alternator output.

Thats what I'm doing now, cleaned up all the grounds last night, and put the battery on the charger. Gonna test the battery voltage this morning, then go from there

I had a similar problem, but it was my speedometer. The speedo would go dead and my engine would lurch and lose power. I would quickly kick the shift lever to N then back again to D and it would temporarily stop. It was maddeningly inconsistent. I got both knock sensor and speed sensor codes. I checked the output voltage of the speed sensor while driving and it was fine. One day out of frustration I pounded on the dash and lo and behold the speedo started working again. I repeated that a few times then pulled the instrument cluster and disconnected the sensor above the speedo. I cleaned the contacts for the blue and brown/white speed sensor wires and I haven't had any repeats since then. The wiring looms make a hard turn upward and I think they pull the contacts awry. Try beating on the dash next time it happens - it can't hurt unless you get real violent.
