Hey guys...

There are a couple post about airbox mods, and cutting out the silencer...

I have the 01 3.3L S/C model... It seemed that most post in those threads where poeple with 2nd Gen owners... Is there a Airbox mod for the 1st gen? Is it the same similar set up?

i have the K&N replacement filter, and have debated buying a full intake... I can get the K&N set up for about $200.00... If there is a mod for the factory airbox, i would be interested in trying that...

Also, What intakes does everyone have on there trucks??? (1st Gen) What is your experience with power/fuel milage? I cain't say that I notice much change with the K&N drop in compared to stock filter, but who know's, it may just be unnoticed...

Any help is appreciated...

There are two resonators you can remove. The first one and most important one is in the driver side fender. Its a pain to get the two bolts that hold it in out. The first bolt is behind the intake box and the other is under the ABS System. You will have to remove the plastic cover in the the wheel well to get the resonator out. The second resonator is behind the air intake box and is a 2" tube that just goes to a box. It can be removed and you can plug that hole.

Now I did have a Volant Intake installed. It now sits in the closet in my room. Dealer would not work on truck since it was a Mass Air Check Engine Light and they said the intake caused it and to remove the intake and see it it comes back. The CEL has never come back on and I can not tell a difference from the Volant installed to the K&N filter with the mod listed above.

Your the best... that was best answer i could have asked for...

Now the hard part.... i'm gonna do this...

I see both of them... I know i can get a cap for the 2nd one... but the one in the fender, once you pulled that out, did you cap it? does it draw air?

i'm kinda confused about that one... it looks like it comes apart in two pieces, can i just shave it back, and leave it there just not hooked up?

i don't know...

The whole point in removing the one in the fender is so it will draw more air, so do not close it off. Just removing that resonator ads a 2 to 3 inch opening drawing more air into the box. If you notice all the air getting to the stock intake is from that little 1" tube infront of the air box and behind the headlights. Its not very efficent if you just look at it.

I have the AEM Brute Force CAI on my 01 and besides a better growl coming from the exhuast, I really cannot tell a difference between the stock setup and now (maybe a slightly better throttle response). I have not removed the fender resonator yet but will try this weekend. If I do, I will let you know if that helped.

1st gen airbox mod

I'd do the stock box mod first and see how it works for you. The main problem with the 3.3 engine is it just doesn't breath all that well. The two valve heads restrict it. Which is why the engine isn't a free revving piece. So modding an airbox or adding a CAI will get you limited gains. Which probably aren't worth the money.

Steve...

Ok, so i went out to the garage to mess with the airbox. I have a question on the one in the fender... I didn't get it out however after taking the botom half of the airbox out, i realized that the plastic sleeve that connects it to the air box would come out. I removed it, and the resinator is still there, just not connected to the filter...

2nd, on the front of the airbox, just behind the drivers light, there is the other part that comes out of the airbox... it comes out and goes both ways... on the fender side, it just goes through the fender, and is open inside of there, the other side has a curvy piece that bolts to a bracket on top of the radiator... What is that? It stays there right?

What did you use to plug the second one?

Also, should i leave that plastic sleeve i pulled out in there, or leave it out too...???

Thanks for all the help...

I removed the fender resonator tonight... I'll let you know if i can tell a differance after driving the truck tommorow...

Well... I ended up removing all 3 resonators.... I can defanatly notice a differance... I am hoping that the increased breathing will help me gain some highway mileage while driving sincably... I don't know yet... But i hope... trying to milk it for everything i can get at this point..

This is a very very very old thread but I don't care.

I took out the first resonator that comes off the intake tube and plugged the whole. Now i'm looking to remove the one in the fender. From what I saw when I removed the entire air box, i'm going to have to get somewhere in the wheel weld (spelling?). Could someone tell me the steps to get that final resonator out so I can see some difference?

I tried for an hour the other day to get at the bolt behind the ABS, even unbolting the ABS, but your still can't move it much due to the lines. I never could even get a glimpse of it so I gave up. I tried ripping it out from underneath as someone had said the plastic would give but mine would not.

i just have a k&n FIPK installed i love it and yes i can tell a diffrence in fuel milage as long as my foot don't jam down the skinny pedal, would it be better if i removed the fender resanator or just leave it be due to the cone filter that comes with the k&n intake and it sucks in more air than i could imagine, i wish i could of heard about this air box mod sooner or i would of tried it, oh well im really happy with my k&n intake though so i say just go with the k&n intake when you are tired of the air box mod.
