I like to use K&N oil filters with the 1in nut welded on the end. I bought a 1in ratcheting wrench and cut it in half. Perfect size to remove the oil filter. Yes, it is good practice to add a film of oil to the o ring on the new filter. Helps with sealing and removal.

Hey man,

I use a Lisle 63600 oil filter wrench that tightens its grip on the filter as you loosen with a socket wrench. It's spring loaded, so you just push it on the top of the filter and it holds itself there.

Amason has it for $6.86, I've probably had mine for 20 years.

Exactly what I use. Far and away the most effective style of filter wrench.
