Hey guys and gals,
My name is Adam, and I'm located in Bakersfield California. I purchased my 05 CC about two months ago, and have had quite an adventure with it! Purchased private party sale, with 60k miles on it for $12k. Not Bad. I have wanted a Tacoma for a long time, but was led to the Frontier when I started seeing comparisons on Edmund's and Consumer Reports, which compared or favored the features between the two competing trucks. The price point seemed to be a better value for the relative features of the Nissan, and so I was swayed.
I took delivery of my Frontier and drove it for about a week in town before taking a brief outing to the California coast, about 500 miles round-trip. At about mile 300, I started noticing a lovely little whining noise coming from the engine compartment. I began searching the internet for common related issues and began to find alarming results. As you may have guessed, this began my introduction into the world of "timing chain guide cams." Additionally, my SES light came on mid-trip, which turned out to be a malfunctioning fuel-sending unit, which also required replacement.
Long story short, I was without my "new truck" for 14 days, while my local Nissan Dealership diagnosed, and the extended warranty company reviewed, consulted, and eventually approved the necessary repairs. I have to say that I am disappointed with the way the service department handled things. Nissan had my approval to tear down the truck on day three, but waited until day five to start the job. The dealership then had the approval from Mercury Ext. warranty to complete repairs on day ten, however chose to procrastinate the project until day fourteen. As it turned out, I discovered a loud clicking noise the day after the repairs were completed, and was back at the shop on what became day fifteen. The fan shroud had to be removed and reassembled, with it facing the "proper" direction.
As a side note, I made a visual inspection of my vehicle with the front of the engine disassembled on day five, and was displeased to see nuts and bolts from the tear down, carelessly strewn across the weather stripping to the engine compartment. I've worked in mobile electronics for a short time, and ALWAYS take care to see that parts are stored in a safe place (tupperware or magnetic bowl, if appropriate) to minimize the the potential loss therein. You eat with your eyes first, and seeing the blatant lack of care taken by my mechanic only lessens my confidence in his ability to do meticulous work, like that of a timing job.
All said and done, I am less than pleased with the ability of my local Nissan Dealership to operate in an efficient OR professional manner. They took a long time to complete the initial tear down, and then abused the situation further when they found out that I had the cost of a rental car covered by a third party. Furthermore, I have been a long-time believer that a professional is being paid well, for the quality that comes with a person whom is familiar with their craft. The fact that my fan shroud was replaced in reverse, by people who work on these vehicles day-in and day-out is almost alarming.
I am satisfied with Mercury Warranty Company, though they took their sweet time in assessing and approving my warranty claims. I imagine that my experience with them is not unique however, and that similar warranty claims likely take about the same amount of time (customer approves tear down, warranty company sends inspector to verify mileage/worn parts/etc, after case review said warranty company approves/denies case claim, then dealer can complete repairs).
I am once again enjoying my new truck, though my confidence is shaken in general. (I have a hunch that I will get out from under it while my extended warranty still has some life in it). I have decided that my local Nissan Dealership is worthless, and have resolved to find a better shop to complete future repairs. I'm glad I bought the extended warranty, though I think it's terms/conditions may be set in such a way that a busy consumer would be willing to pay out of pocket for repairs, before allowing for the time needed to let extended warranty run it's course and cover the cost. For the time being, I'm grateful to have my nice little truck again. Special thanks to clubfrontier.org for helping me asses the problem before I took it into the shop, as I had a better idea of what was in store for me.
2005 CC Frontier LE. 62,137 miles. Time chain cam guides+fuel sending unit replaced @ 61,121 miles. Factory stereo won't accept CD's. (Dumped it for an aftermarket deck anyway...)
