ok im freaking pissed this truck is about to go to hell.

does anyone have issues with their 4wd, cuz mine feels more like its in 2wd!! its the worst 4wd ive ever seen, and thanks to the pos i put my BRAND NEW TRUCK INTO A TREE!!!!! please please please tell me there is something wrong with my 4wd or its just the crappy stock tires. the 2000 kicked more *** in 2wd than this truck does in 4..... very very mad!!!

and also the 4wd wouldnt kick out.....

i stopped, put it in 2 and hit drive and drove it wouldnt go out, so i stopped and tryed the reverse trick, still wouldnt go out. i shut the truck off and turned it back on, still wouldnt go out!!! finally i turned the truck off, shifted into 4 then back to 2, turned the truck back on and it went out.... WTF! im really hoping my 4wd is just a pos, because when my back tires were spinning in the mud my front wasnt doing a damn thing.

and like i said, now i got a nice dent in my brand new truck thanks to this crappy *** 4wd system....

i dont know man, But on your post you said you stopped for it to disengaged well try shifting the 4wd control while your still moving unless of course you're on 4 lo. It should disengaged right on the spot.

I have read in a few other posts that people have had to attempt to engage and disengage a couple of times before it was consistent.
I have no reason why.

i tried taking it out of 4 while i was moving several times at different speed between 10-40 mph. and then of course stopped and all the stuff i said before.

and like i said i was trying to climb a hill and my friends out side said my back tires were spinning but my front wernt doing a damn thing. this thing really makes me sick to my stumach, i guess ill take it to the dealership tomorrow and see what they say.

and it didnt get that muddy, and i washed it asap because of that damn dent.

i think i can bang the dent out my self. the scratchs SHOULD buffout, they really dont look that bad, they pretty much go away rubbing them with my thumb. only problem is i have one spot where the paint chipped off...

Just out of curiosity, if you dented your hood, then that sounds like you couldn't stop short enough to avoid hitting that tree. So how is that related to, or the fault of, the 4wd?

Anyhow, if your rears are spinning and the fronts aren't, then it sounds like you have a problem. Let us know what the dealer says.

uhhh who said i dented my hood? i dented the side of my bed... i was going down a trail and its like its in 2wd, the rear tires spin, and the back end slids sideways, right into a tree. my old frontier never did that, i pass that tree every time i go in/out of our mud hole and me nor any of my friends have ever hit that tree.

i just thought of something.....

there is the little display of the 4tires on the guage cluster... now the back tires are lit up the front are not.. untill u put it in 4wd... now is that the only light that comes on when you put it in 4wd? cuz i had a yellow idiot light come on saying 4wd in the gauge cluster as well.... and a few hours ago when i was messing with the 4wd that light didnt come on but the 4 tires did light up..... is maybe that yellow 4wd light like a warning light saying something is wrong with the 4wd? also when u lock the rear end, is the yellow light suppose to flash that says its locked? cuz mine flashes......

ha!! so see i knew i was in 2wd!!!! which explains why my front tires wernt spinning, and the 4wd sucks so bad that the 2wd 2000 frontier would own this one... because my damn 4wd wasnt working. this makes me happier anyway. still doesnt fix my dent which by the way is going to cost me 1400$ to repair!!!! lol so i guess i need to figure out why the 4wd wasnt working, any ideas? it appears to be working now...

and the rear locker light still flashes.... is that normal?

locker light shouldn't flash... unless you're going over 8mph I think.... As far as engauging and disengauging the 4x4, mine goes right in, but for it to come out you have to let all presure off of the internals (t-case), for example give it some gas and then let off and let it coast.

Here's a trick I learned for engaging the locker. For you it will only engage in 4lo but I have a 2wd. I go at a slow crawl and hit the switch. Then I turn the wheel left and then right real quick so the rear tires turn at different speeds. It engages perfectly everytime when i do this. before I picked up on this trick I had some trouble getting it to engage. Disengaging, you can do similar. Go at a slow roll, hit the switch off and turn side to side real quick and it should cut off.

Ive engaged mine a few times now on a gravel road barely moving, works perfect everytime, I was in first and second gear, off the gas once and about 1500RPM another time, it seems almost instant, if the 4wd light blinks theirs a problem, the owners manual sez something about it. Iam still well under the recommended breakin period of 1200 miles so after that I may see how she goes or buy a beater for the mud. Buying a beater would be cheaper in the long run.

i'm glad to hear you are back to loving the frontier. it is definitely the best truck i have ever had. the 4wd rocks. i wish i had a rear locker even if i have never felt the need for it with the moderate wheeling that i do.

you really dont need a locker, most people dont ever do the right type of wheelin to need it. only time ill ever use my locker is when i get stuck with a wheel off the ground
yeah man you're right. Most people will never even know how to engage it. I've been asking TRD owners for years now if they've ever used it. Most of the time the answer is "what? oh that button to the left of the steering wheel... no I've never used it". I've used mine already a few times, but we get snow here and have had a lot of ice and we're in the mountains AND I'm stupid and tend to get into odd situations. I can tell you one thing, when visiting my parents house this year after 3" of clear ice I was the only person who could get to their house, and that's out of Ford Exploder, Chevy 2500, Subaru, and a Ford f150. All 4x4.

That really sucks about the dent on your new Fronty, but glad you're back to lovin' it. I found it easier to engage the locker while in neutral and at a stop. I haven't had too good of luck getting it to engage while moving.
