For those that helped me the other day thanks! Just bought the receiver and 7pin wiring harness kit. Install time about 45 mins to 1 hour if alone. VERY EASY install!!

Quick pics if anyone needs/wants to see the actual receiver hitch and 7pin assembly. This is the setup you NEED if you want to tow something with your Frontier. ( can use 4 pin instead of 7 pin)

Hopefully these photos help anyone who like me couldn't find any good pics and this information anywhere else.

It figures they would change something. I checked it when I initially was going to connect it but I did not see any blank or empty connector behind the passenger kick panel. I will have to do a little more digging in the panel to make sure they did not hide it up in the dashboard area. I appreciate the info. Thanks again.
You're welcome. When you find it, please post some photos so others will know.
My 2006 Connectors

I purchased a used 2006 XE recently. I am new to trucks and I am doing my homework to get a receiver hitch and wiring.

This is my first post so I hope the picture attachmet shows up okay.

Is the white connecter the 7 pin adaptor and the black connector the 4 pin adaptor that will run to a wiring harness?

Thanks,

--Steve

With the 7 pin connector, you will use both. With the 4 pin, I think only one. Easiest way is to buy harness from Nissan with instructions. That way you get the assessory relays as well.
As promised

Did this to mine today. Great idea Zero. This way you don't store and loose an adapter and you still have both.
Thanks.

Thanks. You're welcome. Some full size trucks have both connectors with the towing package. It makes sense to me to have it that way. :goodjob:
4 wire to 5 wire conversion

I've spent a couple hours looking at the wiring schematic from Nissan for my '07 frontier and I think I may have the solution of converting a 4 to 5 pin if anyone is interested. I will attempt the fix tomorrow. I believe the fifth wire should be hooked to the "yellow" wire on the grey connector.

This setup is used for pulling a boat trailer that has surge brakes. This wire should provide power to the solenoid on the trailer for backing the trailer up. I knew this Electrical Engineering degree would come in handy one day.:)
OK I am somewhat confused here. So I just bought a new Reese hitch for my 08 Fronty and I asked for a wiring kit for it and was given a 4 plug harness that plugs in under the driver side rear. Now reading all this... do I need to get the relays as well to make the 4 plug harness work or are the relays only for the 7 plug?

I may just go and order the 7 plug anyways and do it all... but any info to help clarify this for me would be great.

Also, just so I am certain to what I think is being said here.... If you got the towing package... you should already have the 1) hitch 2) 7 plug wiring harness 3) relays all installed and working. But if you do not have the towing package you have to add 1) hitch 2) whatever wiring plug you want 3) relays (for both 4 and 7-plug or just 7-plug? and 4) the plug under the drivers right rear side should be there towing package or not?

Thanks for the clarifications.

Yes, unless they changed something between 05-08, you still need the harness that plugs in behind the passenger kick panel to get all of your trailer lights working properly.
Perfect, thanks for the quick reply... I will check behind the kick panel just to be on the safe side tomorrow. Since I am in Canada, they do add some crazy stuff to our trucks that aren't stock on others sometimes.

i know u posted the pics already and this thread is old but i cant find where the other side of the relay connects too ... i found the long rectangular connector hooks up to but on the other side of mine .... there r 3 connectors which i dont know where they go ... anybody have more detailed pics please because i cant get running light on any of my trailiers .... signal and brake lights work but running light at night do not work and im guessing this relay is the reason why?

The three connectors go to the relays, if you have an auto you will only use 2 of the connectors which would be one blue and one brown relay.

I am installing mine right now and also was confused by this step. The actual relays are the three square plastic pieces that are about the size of a domino. There should have been three that came in your kit (2 blue and a brown). Those are what gets plugged into the 3 connectors (but only plug in 2 of them if you have an automatic transmission, one brown and one white).

Hope that helps...

do u have a pic of that ... which is a lil more detailed ... i kinda half a** looked at it and didnt see any empty connectors to plug into ... thats why i was more confused?
I think you are confused in thinking that both ends of your new trailer relay wiring actually connect to available plugs in the kick panel.

They do not.

One end does connect to the connector in the kick panel and the other end (w/ the 3 connectors) just gets the relays plugged into them...2 for auto, 3 for manual. Then, wrap it back up in the foam and tie it to the existing bundle of cables.

I think this is correct, and although I do not have a picture its fairly easy to do. The other issue you may have trouble is figuring out (if you have automatic transmission) is which 2 of the three conectors to plug the relays into. The pictures I got on my instructions were garbage. But Im fairly sure this is the order.

-Plug the Brown relay into the brown connector.
-you then have two blue relays left and two available connections. one of the connectors should have a piece of white tape on the wires just below the plastic connector. I think you plug in the blue relay to the OTHER connector (the one with no tape).

Hope this helps..
so if you splice the 4 pin connection into the 7 pin setup do you or do you not have issues? someone was saying how it dose not deliver enough power or something and caused the system to not function properly. just wondering if they found a way to fix it because i am interested in doing that setup.

I don't see any way to have any problems if you Y splice the wires and solder them. You would only be using one plug or the other at any given time so power should never be an issue.
Someone sticky this ****
X2......
It only took me half hour to install the hitch, and an hour to figure out the wiring thanks to the blacked out pictures and vague instructions in the box.
