Question automatic shift knob won't manually shift into first

So like the title says, on my 2012 Equator, the automatic shift knob won't manually shift into first gear. It was able to shift manually into each gear before, but after I removed the shift handle and replaced it, it will not shift into 1st manually. I cannot see anything that I could have done that would prevent it, but...it is not shifting into first now...so... anyone have this issue before? anyone know how to fix, or what the cause might be?

To clarify, It wont shift into first? or you physically can't get the knob into the "1" slot?

IMO i would check your ATF just a start.

More likely, I would check your linkages since you replaced the shift knob.

I know this sounds dumb but I've seen it before..is your "second" actually your first or do you feel two gears run when you stick the knob into the 2nd slot? in other words, when you slide the knob into the "2" does the truck actually run 1st to 2nd or does it just hold one gear?

Nothin to see here.

So the lever will slide sideways into first, but the digital display on the dash will not change from 2 to 1 like it used to and the tranny will not downshift into first if I try to make it do it manually. it works fine in automatic. It has to be something with the lever, or electronics in the assembly of the lever.

Sounds like your cable linkages are messed up... it started after you played with the selector, start there. Either a connector is not fully seated or a cable end got backed oit a thread or you missed connecting one entirely.
Why did you tear it apart in the first place?

all I did was remove the shift handle to see what aftermarket knobs I could use in its place. then I put the original back on. No linkage was loosened or removed, nothing else was messed with.

The 2-1 shifter has nothing to do with linkage. There is a microswitch that is triggered when you move to 1st. You screwed up that microswitch or the wiring. How you did that is beyond me, that that is what you screwed up.
